power needed for GTS 450 and GT 240

hi guys

I want to take your advice on something , here it is

I am newbie with CUDA and i have the GPU EVGA GT240 512 with CPU AMD phenom II x4 965 @3.4 GHZ and PSU cooler master Elite Power 400W came with case Cool master Elite 350

ok now i am thinking about move into fermi architecture for my apps , so with my budget i will get GTS 450 and take advantage of having 2 gpu to use

parallel Nsight to debug coz i need two cards to run nsight debugger.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 video card requires a 400 Watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 22 Amps on the +12 volt rail according to NVIDIA for a single GPU, so you are covered for one card.

The card has a maximum power draw of a GTS 450 is 106 W, so I'd say for two cards you'd be looking at a ~500W power supply...

Looks like your PSU is right at the breaking point for two cards.

Might want to look into a GeForce GTX 460 as well as they need a 450 Watt power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps and are monsters.

If you look at the performance numbers a single overclocked GTX 460 performs faster than two stock GTS 450 cards in SLI. Due to that I'd suggest you buy a GTX 460 and then save SLI for an upgrade path later in the year.

I was thinking about the 460 and my concern was the PSU and since i have to change the PSU anyway , I think i will get the 460

Definitely get a PSU first, the Cooler Master Elite series is one of the worst lines of power supplies

things are a lot easier if you get a PSU with a single 12v+ at 40A or better. single rails simplify things and are generally better builds

OCZ makes some decent low budget power supplies, I have run a stealthXstream 600w to power a 3.8GHz Phenom II X6 and overclocked 460 1GB, was a good way to spend $50 for sure

hi , first thanks for your advice

i dont live in the states and in Egypt there is much less options when it comes to PSU's

i thought first about the Coolmaster exterme power and you mentioned the OCZ and i found that within my budget we have the OCZ GameXStream 600W

i think that GameXStream is predecessor of the series SilentXStream and here is the specs for both , i think its identical

so do you recommend this PSU ??

second , i know that you would think this is a dum question but how do i calculate the 12v rail current rating

you mentioned 40A but i find 4 v12 with each 18A and from physics as i remember theoretically i should divide 580/12 ~ 48 A

so how the 40 is calculated and what is the difference between having +12v1 +12v2 +12v3 and like in this ocz it has +12v4

and the reason i ask this is because EVGA website for EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked

says

Requirements
Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps.)

so this 24 Amps that EVGA is talking about ;which one of these we are talking about ?:D

is it the 18 that is written on each 12v rail or the 48 that i calculated

I am so confused.

that looks good

and you just add the amps together, 18A x4 = 72

but with multi-rail power supplies you have to make sure you spread the power across the rails, but if you see the whole sticker:

looking at the whole sticker, you see that the PCIe 6-pin connectors have their own rails (though it shares the extra CPU cable with one connector)

this is a pic of my StealthXstream, you see that the PCIe connectors total 18A because they both use 12v+ #4

video cards in your system can use up to the sum total of the PCIe connectors going into the card, as well as the M/B Accessory, because the motherboard's PCIe slot also powers the card. in the GameXstream's case, there is more power going to the video cards(up to 3 rails depending on CPU and accessory power draw) and less to the CPU ( up to the 2 rails depending on GPU power draw. This only worse if you are overclocking 6-core's really)

in short, that gameXstream would run a GTX 460 1GB system great, and most likely run GTS 450 SLI, but It will likely struggle with 460 1GB SLI if you go that route (You'd have to run 2x molex-6-pin connectors because the GameX only has 2 PCI connectors) because my StealthXstream shut itself off when I had my 460 and a GTS 250 stressed along with my 4GHz 1055T (the 250 was using a MB/Accessory rail, with the 460 taking the 12v #4) but my 1055T was drawing serious power (way more than 200w at load) because of the overclock

Thanks very much for this elaboration and your time and the pictures were great, actually i wouldn't have never found 12v power dist list any where on websites

i think i will buy that ocz because i only have a GT240 besides the GTX 460 and i am not interested in over clocking or SLI in the main time and my cpu (x4 965)

C3 only used 125 W and also i am not interested in over clocking it beyond the 3.4 without a proper heat sink which i dont have now.

and the GT 240 only have its power of the PCI E slot and i am probably not going to go full power with the cards because as i said it will only be used for

programming computational problems (no much graphics) but you as a folder know that even these math problems heat up the GPU's :)

sorry , i have a quick question concerning the cards

I have mother board GB 790XTA-UD4 and it has 2 PCI E one running x16 and one x8 and if used both i will get x8 on both (they share the BW)

so is there will be a significant drop in the 460 performance if running at x8

another meaning , what factors are going to be affected if the card running at x8 instead of x16 (the shader freq,GFLOPS,etc.......)
