Rule of thumb for me is if I want to run one instance of application faster, I update CPU or GPU; if I want to run multiple instances of applications like many browser tabs more comfortably, I add RAM.

Merlin, you can do this bothway. You can do the proc now and wait for mobo+ram upgrade or the other way around. The decisive factors should be what you want right now and how long you want or can afford to wait for the inevitable overhaul. If you want some quick and dynamic performance boost, you have but only one choice- the cpu. I tottaly agree with the other guys on this, you will see much faster execution with that 965BE. Win 7+ 2 gig memory won't give you that. And if you don't plan to stick with this config much longer, DDR2 is bad investment as mentioned earlier. On the other hand if you can afford to manage things with your Athlon 64 + 4 Gigs(total) for some time to come- do that and do that fast. DDR2 price will only go up and Phenom II+DDR3 will only be marked down pricewise. Though I read on some site that Mobo price may hike later this year. From my exp. I was fine with a fast proc(920) + 2 gig kingston 1033mhz ddr3+ win XP on a 1920*1080 panel while using CS3 for texture editing along with nifscope and other apps.

*(Guys, I'm a new member in this forum and couldn't help myself since I was in the same spot as Merlin couple of years back with my old Pentium D+1gig ddr2 and XP:))

I know I am wearing this out but now there is a new question. I cannot find reviews for these on Legit Reviews and I don't read other peoples so what do you all think of these...Intel core I3 560 at $150, AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE is $89.00 !! X2 565 BE $119.00 I know the X4 965 BE is a great processor but if I went with the X2 555 I could get the CPU and the OS for just a little more than the CPU alone ( 965 BE is $179, 555 + win7 64 bit OEM is $189)

You get the i3 you have to buy a new motherboard and RAM. I'd skip a dual core, since that's what you have now. Get a cheaper X4 and overclock it.

Either one of these should work, but verify it with Gigabyte's CPU Support List.

With a Phenom IIx2 555 there was a possibility that you could unlock the extra two cores with some luck but your existing mobo probably won't do that :(

Possible but not guaranteed. Then we have to assume his motherboard has the ACC feature.

The only reason I was considering another Dual core is that the socket AM3 has the DDR3 memory controller and I am not sure if any of the games I play will actually use the other two cores in a quad core.

the same can't be said about DAO, Crysis, COD or Tomb Raider, but battlefield will take as many cores as you can give it, with substantial FPS gain with each additional core
