Re: Sound card
Have you disabled the on-board sound card in the BIOS?
Re: Sound card
No I have not. I don't recall ever having to do that in the past with a PCI sound card. Wouldn't the system still detect something installed in the PCI slot?

Re: Sound card
It should do, but it's a simple reboot to test.Merlin wrote:No I have not. I don't recall ever having to do that in the past with a PCI sound card. Wouldn't the system still detect something installed in the PCI slot?
I tend to try the simple things first, too many times in the past I've found myself on the floor with parts all around me; only to find the problem was some driver setting or something in the BIOS.
Re: Sound card
You know the drill. Try it in another computer and see what happens. If it fails to recognize the device then it's probably DOA.
Re: Sound card
I dont have another computer. I disabled the on board audio in BIOS and I got it working but I still have the same problem that promted me to buy this card in the first place. I am playing Mass effect 2 again before buying mass effect 3 and while in conversation it sounds like the person I am talking to is in a pipe. All the other sounds are fine. This only happens when I connect my headphones. If I plug in my speakers the conversation audio works fine but a few of the background noises are gone. I suppose it is possible that my speakers AND headphnes are jacked up but that seems unlikely....

Re: Sound card
How are you connecting the headphones? To the speakers or to the soundcard? If you have the game setup to do 5.1 on 2.0 headphones then dialogue is probably going to be messed up.
Re: Sound card
I plug the headphones into the sound card. I guess it would help IF I had any idea what 4.1, 7.1 etc means. I will try to check the in game sound settings. With a sub woofer and a right and left what setting do I need to use??

Re: Sound card
4.1 means 4 speakers with a subwoofer. 7.1 means 7 speakers with a subwoofer. What is the actual soundcard you bought from Newegg?
Also, what port (i.e. Green, Yellow, Black, Blue, etc...) are you plugging the headphones into the soundcard? Green is the two front speakers. If you aren't using that plug then your stereo headphones aren't going to sound right.

Re: Sound card
Its an Audigy SE and I am using the green plug. I checked the game settings and all they have as options is setting the volume of dialog and sound affects. In the Creative settings menu they have different speaker configurations but only one headphones setting.

Re: Sound card
Well I was hoping the card had front audio support, but I see that it doesn't. What operating system are you running? There are a few things you can try in the Control Panel.

What does the Creative Control Panel show you under speakers?
Re: Sound card
2.1,4.1,5.1,7.1 and headphones. My speakers are really old and the headphones are as well so it is possible that they are both bad or the jack is worn in a way that makes clean connection hit or miss...

Re: Sound card
Do you have another set of headphones you can try (i.e. cheap ear buds that came with a phone, MP3 player, etc...)?

What are you using to VON with? Creative soundcards not the greatest for VON with some programs, Team speak happens to be one of them.

Re: Sound card
To add, your probably gonna think I am a bit weird for this (but then again most people already do when I tell them) I use a large set of head phones as my mic. Not a head set, but just the head phones themselves plugged into the mic input on the creative sound card. Still sound like crap but it does make me sound better then any thing else I have tried.

Re: Sound card
LOL, post a pic of you with headphones on and your headphone mic.
Re: Sound card
I assume VON means voice over network...I don't use it at all right now. I did try a set of earbuds and it appears the headphones are bad. That does not explain the speaker wierdness but they are a 4.1 set that i got 3 months pre Y2K so I should not be surprised they don't work well. Thanks for all the help!!

Sorry you bought a sound card for nothing. But I'm glad you got it worked out.
