11/08/2012 – As promised in the previous article focus on the remote backup part of Data Guard, we are now going to go over the options offered regarding Local Backup. For the 3rd and last article of this series, you’ll get to learn about cloud backup with AmazonS3. When adding local backup task to their NAS, the users are faced with many options. A total of five to be precise; All located under Data Guard in the “Backup” tab of the UI menu list, each of them will give you control of securing your precious data within your NAS. Let’s have a closer look at each of them.

Import

Import lets you take the data from external devices connected thru the USB or eSATA port and back them up securely on the NAS in a newly created folder which is also a share folder. This way you can have all of your external HDDs for example store in a safe location in your NAS so that when that hard drive crashes, all of its content will still be accessible.

Copy

With copy you have three options. Either you can copy a RAID Folder to another Raid Folder, copy RAID Folder to an External Device or copy an External Device to a RAID Folder. Selecting the source and the target, you can have the peace of mind that your data is backed up properly

Real Time Backup

Real Time Backup is similar to Copy to the extent that you get to select the source and the target location where the data/Raid folder will be copied. The only difference is that the data will be backed up as the changes are made on the source folder, keeping you data constantly backed up.

Schedule Backup

Like the name suggest, Schedule Backup lets you set the moment of the day or the week you wish to perform the desired backup task. This can be performed on RAID folder to RAID folder or on RAID Folder to External Device.

SCSI Backup

Your iSCSI volumes can also be backed-up to either RAID Folders or External devices. You can simply do so by selecting the iSCSI Backup option in the Local Backup section of Data Guard. Then to retrieve this backed up data, you can select iSCSI Import.

Conclusion

Thecus® Data Guard offers a wide range of backup solutions. As you can see, local backup provides users with a multitude of easy to use and flexible features which caters to all types of users who seeks to back up their critical data. All Thecus® NAS running on ThecusOS™ 5.0 supports Data Guard and the mentioned local backup options. At once, set-up and manage all your backup tasks under one location.
