How to Stop Receiving Credit Card Offers

Post by Apoptosis »

Are you sick of getting Pre-Approved credit card, loan, insurance, and credit related letters in the mail? I was and used the Opt-Out request to cut down on the junk mail i get. It works and here is how you can do it.

What is Opt-Out?
Opting-Out refers to the process for removing your name from lists supplied by the Consumer Credit Reporting Companies, Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion, to be used for firm (preapproved / prescreened) offers of credit or insurance. Your rights as a consumer under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) include the right to "Opt-Out". Through this site, the Consumer Credit Reporting Companies are providing consumers with an easy and convenient way to exercise their right to Opt-Out. This service is not intended for businesses or companies.

How to do it:

Call 1-888-5 OPTOUT or visit https://www.optoutprescreen.com/ to remove yourself for 5 years or forever.

I'll have to look into this. I get about 1-3 offers EVERY FREAKING DAY!! Give me a break! I already have three credit cards, one of which is getting cancelled once it's paid off (Trek CC). I don't need any more!

It's funny when all the mail is mine... then you look at it and it's all JUNK! :finga:

I always cross my name out, and put everything they sent me in teh return envelope that has the prepaid postage, and send it back. That way, the credit card company has to pay for the postage, and they get nothing from it. It only works if you send it back because the prepaid postage doesnt get charged unless the letter is sent int he mail. Another great thing would be use the prepaid postage envelopes to mail your own mail, just just a sticker label for the new address.

I would imagine so, all mail these days are machine scanned and sorted. Human eyes never see the address sticker until they're at your mailbox.
Unless you use a weird font like Wingdings and get the envelope kicked off the line.

Well, I barely use postal mail at all, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Maybe I'll mail something to myself.

It would be a shame to waste perfectly good postage. :P

i have done it twice, and the letters got there on time. They send us the envelopes with postage, we are just using them, and now wasting paper. Make sure it it does come with a return address, to cover it aswell. How many people have ever received an envelope which had you address on a sticker, that was on the front. Same concept, except its not your money being spent to mail it.

You may have gotten away with it, But I wouldn't send anything you really want to get there that way (and why would you send something you don't care about?)
It' a violation of the USPS "business reply class" postage rules, and is supposed to be destroyed rather than delivered.
If they choose the USPS or the business owner could file charges, ( USPS penalty is Up to $25k and 5 years in jail  ) though that is unlikely.

Well I'm on the no credit card offer list now, so I after a month or so I could file a counter suit that I shouldn't even be getting these mailings.

You CAN however use that return envelope to mail them something large and useless...although I personally don't recommend it, since you're only hurting the poor guy who works there, not the company :p
