DVD Ripping suggestions
DVD Ripping suggestions
Looking for software to rip our movies wtih the following requirements:
- H264/aac is preferred. Needs to be able to play on one recent and one 2-3 year old Sony smart TV's. (Edit: MP3 audio is fine as well though I would prefer to not lose the 5.1/etc)
- Must support closed captions. Not sure if possible but can they be embedded so they are shown based on the setting of the player/tv?
- Easy to use (most likely going to have the wife do this as well)
- Can work with copy protected DVD's. (Yes, I legally own the DVD's and will be keeping them, just want to throw them in storage instead of having them here).
Doesn't have to be free, dont mind paying for something that will work well.
Since I know its going to be the default answer, handbrake is out. Needing to rip then encode with 2 different programs fails the wife test. Handbrake also fails the CC requirement as a 3rd program is needed for this making the wife test fail even more.
The one I am leaning to currently is WinX DVD Ripper, but I figured I would post and see if anyone has had success wtih anything else.

Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
Have you checked out MakeMKV? I have been using that program to try and rip my collection and it works very nicely if you dont want compression. I dont think it will compress the movie just rip it to h264 with mkv container. I have fallen behind on my ripping (running out of space on my NAS) so I cant remember exactly how much it does.

Isnt this just a player? I need to rip the disks as the whole point of the exercise is to put the discs in storage.FZ1 wrote:Check out AnyDVD HD
Unfortionately Sony tv's dont support mkv format (well the newer one might, cant find a supported file format page on it, but the one that is a couple years old wont for sure) so this is out unless i transcode them to something else which is what I am looking for.KnightRid wrote:Have you checked out MakeMKV? Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
I use DVDFab HD Decrypter then loop it through Handbrake only because I'm cheap and don't want to pay for the full DVDfab suite. The full DVDfab suite does all the ripping/converting in one go, even Blu-Ray, but its not cheap.
The Close-caption part is what I drawing a blank on. With it only being in one file, think it has to be burned in, which means its always on. Don't think you can switch it on/off unless it is separate files.

Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
DVDFab HD + Handbrake/Vidcoder/XMedia Recode (pick your poison).
Handbrake and Vidcoder are essentially the same program setup a little differently. XMedia Recode requires more user input but sometimes that's a good thing.

Not when the wife will be doing a bunch of this.Major_A wrote:requires more user input but sometimes that's a good thing.
The CC thing is the issue, having to burn them in is what I figured I would have to resort to doing which means Ill have to double rip everything (once w/cc, once without).
Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
I run through DVDfab HD Dycryptor Free, then loop it through Handbrake.
When I ripped all my movies I try to do them in batches, so 5-10 in a shot. Ripped them to the hard drive first. Then before I head off to bed I load them all up in Handbrake. Dump all movies into the cue, sometimes I double one up because I want a smaller version for my phone. Hit start and go to bed, let it crunch all night, next day spot check ones I know had foreign subs in them to make sure they converted. Make sure the all converted, move them to the NAS, dump the rips, and start the next batch.
You could do the same. Load the rip into Handbrake's queue twice, once with forced subs, once with only the foreign subs. When you add it in you can have the file name set already. Otherwise using an all-in-one program you have to rip it twice, convert it twice.
And, the way I do it doesn't cost anything, all free.

How about - http://www.dvdaux.com/overview.html
Found that reading the comments on - http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/aiseeso ... -platinum/ - that one is free only today but the first posted one is free forever from what I have seen.
I might try - http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Too ... ster.shtml - that the same person posted in the comments because it does not convert, just saves as iso

Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
This program is new and costs money and I also can't comment on how well it works. I used to use their app ConvertXToDVD because it just worked and faster than anything I was using before it. Now with the advent of everything having a decoder chipset DVDs aren't really that appealing. Check out the software and reviews.

Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
Im a big DVD fan. According to the information i have known, the DVDFab DVD ripper / $49 (http://www.dvdfab.com/dvd-ripper.htm) has the most powerful DVD decryption capability; Aimersoft DVD ripper / $39 (http://www.aimersoft.com/dvd-ripper.html) is a mid-level DVD digitization program; Leawo DVD ripper / $29 (http://drm-assistant.com/dvdrippingsoftware.html) is the cheapest one. By the way, none of the three rippers is capable of perserving/adding caption you demand.
Re: DVD Ripping suggestions
In the event of something like, I use an application called "AppGeeker DVD Ripper" which can convert all of my DVD collections to any type of video format (mpeg-4, h.264, etc.) you want, and choose the file sizes without compromising the quality that much.
http://www.appgeeker.com/convert/rip-dv ... 4-mac.html
I am running a Mac, I think they make a pc version of it, too.
