system unstable after memory installation

Post by ziqiproject »

Hello, I have installed a new ram onto my asus a7v333 mainboard, and now have a prob. I have in total two pc2100 256(1 single sided 1 double), 1 512 pc2100, all works fine individually. and infact, 1 512 and 1 256 also works fine together(768). but if i put on another 256, then there is a prob. in bios i can read memory is 1024, but system often halts when windows xp starts loading. once xp was successfully started up, but after a while autorestarted again. so i doubt there is something wrong with memories.
while i dont know what exactly goin wrong, but some points could be suspicious:

1. mainboard has 3 slots in total, manual says it supports 3gb ram intotal, but i remmbered that some said this board only support 4 banks, so in my case, when all rams are plugged in there are 5 banks, which makes it not possible to work? however if this is the reason why in bios i can still read 1024?

2. is there something to do with the allocation of slots? when i tested i had 256 double sided in slot 1, 512 in slot 2, and 256 single sided in slot 3, havent tried other order yet.

any help pls? thanks alot!

Boards from that generation hated having all three DIMM's full and you are using more banks than the chipset supports. Since memory has become so cheap I suggest selling off some of your modules and getting some newer ones. A 512MB kit of PC-3200 Kingston memory is going for $41 shipped, while a 1GB kit can be had for $85 shipped. Sticking with the same capacity and brand is always best!
