Rolling my own: Please recommend components

Post by wingnut »

This is a follow up to my thread: "Need help finding system builder"

Target: A system capable of housing dual processor, dual core AMD Opteron 275's
Up to 8 gig of memory
Dual gig/100/10 network adapters
At least 4 USB2's avail with at least 2 avail from front/top of case
At least 2 Firewire pots avail from front/top
Graphics card capabilites so that I can run 4 1920x1200 monitors and ideally 2 or 3 at that res plus 1 or 2 at 2560x1600 (New 30" Dell coming out next week)
Dual WD Raptor 74Gbyte drives running in Raid 1.
Room for 2 more drives in the 200 - 500 gig range.
1 DVD drive that will handle all of the latest formats plus CD's
Will be running Win XP but needs to be able to run XP 64
Motherboard sound is ok if it has at least 5.1
Power supply should be of high quality.

Note: I'd like to have the above capable of doing some overclocking even to the extent of adding water cooling at a later date.

Initial Use:
1 of the above processors
2 gig memory
USB's, Firewire, networking as above
Graphics as above.
Dual WD Raptor's as above
and the rest of the list as above.

I was going to post what I'd picked so far but that was using the limited list from Monarch and I'd really like to see what you duudes would recommend. I'm not going to say money is no object 'cause it is BUT I'm after a very nice system that will be reliable first and flexible second - price comes in at third.

Have at it!

Oh, and by the way - THANKS!

that would be one hella big system.... what are you doing with it, and it better not be just to play CS lol

edit:

Oh the vid card you want (if you really need 4 screens) is the nVidia Quadro NVS 400 max is 4 displays 2048x1536 (analog) and 1280x1024 (digital) but that is $500-600USD

what's CS?

I'll be using it to watch porn.

Actually, I'll be using it for stock trading simulations. Plus it'll serve as main machine. My current dual Xeon will be backup and I've been helping develop a way to do the simulations via distributed processing so that with both machines humping I might can reduce the run times that are how taking as long as 3 days...

It'll be a thrill to have it running and I'll certainly post a pic - I might just doc the whole process via pics and post them.

Do your own research, and once you pick your components ask for comments. Rather than using people here to build YOUR whole PC for you. It seems you've got an idea of what you wan't but its still up to you to pick.
