thanks but actually I'm pretty unhappy with my points. my prescott 3.2 is @ 3.71Ghz with HT, running 24/7 and I'm barely getting any job done. or is it normal for my rig? can anyone give me a suggestion on how to improve my F@H? I tried to run a second one with the idea that I would turn on the second one for the night so my CPU could get a 100% load instead of 50% but when trying to run it got an error saying I was allready running one instance :(

Running 2 instances won't help....

IF you look here you'll see there arn't many high point work units @ the moment.... 600pts is normally the max per WU....if you can get them...

You can try downloading the console version...then run it from dos...
type FAH**** -config (you only have to do this once)
Then type username/team number....when asked if you want to run as a service...choose yes...when asked for advanced options....choose yes...
I choose 3mins for time to save work.....128mb for ram usage...IF you run more than 1 rig i choose a relevent machine # (not essential as FAH gives a unique ID for each cpu anyway)

If you choose it to run as a service, it will run in the backroung all of the time without you knowing......You need to reboot for it to happen...
Also if you want to disable the FAH service, incase of gaming, goto start/run type services.msc d-click on the FAH service and click either pause or stop :)
It will restart automatically after reboot (if "startup type" is set to automatic, in the services options, which it is by default 8) )

(you can also edit services by r-click My Compter con got manage, instead of services.msc)

Info overload, but......hope it helps....

For this mth I've had my X2 and a 3.6 P4 running nearly 24/7....yet my average hasn't gone up much either
Your contribution has been noticed mate ;)

I'm a bit lost on what you mean. what is FAH**** -config?
how do I do it step by step? how much is your 3.6 pentium getting on average? (what is it's share out of the 600?)

My vaerage Pts per day is 299 thats for 2 pc's

When I said FAH*** -config, I mean open a DOS window and run FAH504cosole -config --> the ** just stood for the full name of the program

You need to use the -config switch when you run the console version, It just tells the program you want to configure it.....(remember this is the console version, no point & click)

I create a folder on my c:\ drive called "FAH" and place FAH504console.exe in there
Then goto start / run / CMD
type cd c:\FAH then FAH504console.exe -config

ok, so I downloaded the console version and configured it as you said except didn't make it run as a service automatically because I want to run it manually only at night when I don't do anything else but F@H.
my questions:
-is it OK to run the console and the graphical client at the same time (thus utilizing 100% of my HT prescott)?
-why is it that even though I configured the console, when sarting from it's folder, it says user:anonymous and team:0 but when I go in to dos and write in : c:\fah\fah504 -config it has the name and team nbr. correctly and starts working? can I start it manually and have the right config without going to dos and config?

When you run c:\fah\fah504 -config it should ask for your username/team number etc. then ask do you want to enable advanced options...I chose yes...then save time 3mins......somewhere i get asked if i want it to un as a service...chose yes...it ways it will run @ reboot.....then it d/l's as WU and starts all in a dos window...then after i close it and reboot it's running in the backround

are you letting it download a work unit and start folding for a while b4 closing it? try that mayby?

It also warns not it from the folder after setting as a service....thats could be the prob?

Try rebooting then after 2-3mins check taskmanager...without running anything (make sure the standard version is not running in the taskbar)

Running 2 instances with 1 cpu will reduce performance BIG TIME.....
why is it that even though I configured the console, when sarting from it's folder, it says user:anonymous and team:0
how are you starting it? via dos or D-Click?

If you run the -config command and it comes up with your settings automatically...then it's using those settings!

Happy Christmas BTWImage

thanks Ken, Happy christmass to you too.

No, you didn't read what I said. I did confugure the console in dos as you said with only one exception: I did not want it to run as a service automatically, so I didn't say yes to that onpurpose. when I'm clicking the console exe in it's folder the dos service is not running, so I'm not attempting to run 2 instances of the console at the same time. but yes I do wanted to run 2 instances of folding: one console in dos and one graphical client. (but daytime - only the graphical client)
the reason why I thought the two will increase my folding is because my CPU has HT (hyper threading) and when I just run one instance of the graphical client and check my CPU usage in task manager, it shows only about 50%. now that I'm running one instance of the graphical client and one console in dos, the task manager shows them both running and the CPU load @ 100%.
I thought since with the graphical client only, it seems only half of my CPU is working, I would try to increase that (at night only) by manually adding the console. also when I run the console manually, I don't have to restart my rig at all. do you think that even though I have HT and now the CPU appears to be utilized 100% instead of 50%, I'm still going to get less performance? sorry for the long explanation but you missunderstood me before, so maybe now it's more clear what my question is :)

If your trying to run the consule as a service but not have it on, still say yes in the setup it will install then go to the services mananger and set it to manual.

Your next options are either to create a batch file that starts and stops the service, or you could us the task schedualer to start and stop it at specific times.

Or you can just do it manualy turn it on when your ready and off when you want.

thanks, I prefer to start it manually. so do you think running the graphical client + the console would increase my performance with my setup (HT) or actually decrease it? or should I just wait and see how my average comes out?

Honeslty the best your going to get is no HT consule only. It would do even better if you did not use your computer :) but we know there is no point in that.

I've read all I could on folding here and I know that it would be best to turn off HT but I don't want to do that 'cause I'm multitasking daytime and running the graphical client while multitasking or even gaming is fine but if I turn off HT I would not be able to game or do anything else when running F@H except if I turn it off alltogether. so I leave on HT and still am able to play and when I'm finished I just add the console to the work. so any experience on which is better:
- running the graphical client + the console in HT ?
- or just running the graphical client in HT ?
- or just running the console in HT ?

if no experience on these, then I will just use the first choice for now and see if it improves my score.

since your leaving on HT, then using two consule would be best. The graphical clinet while cool does not help your PPD any. My work computer is the same way, i really multitask to much to turn off HT so i have one instance set to bigpackets and one not, that gets me decent ponits. not as much as just one QMD would though.

Happy christmas!

even if you do everyting thats poss to increase you PPD, it will only go up by a little, unless as infinite said, you use the pc for nothing else!

I only have HT off on my p4 rig because i'm not using @ the 'mo.

thanks guys. I will wait then till the graphical client finishes the WU it's doing and then I uninstall it, make one console as a service running in the background and the other (with a different ID, in a different folder) run manually for the night. merry christmass to you all :P

Electron Microscope III

It will also allow you to check on multiple pc's on a lan too ;)

Right now my X2 rig is crunching a 600pt WU with ~18hrs to go

The P4 rig is doing a 44pt WU with ~ 3hrs to go........

It will even warn you when there's a prob
8)

BTW...since you have it as a service, you can easily stop/pause/start the service by: R-Click my computer, goto Manage...then services (xp pro only)
XP home = start...run...type "services.msc" d-click folding service, click "start/stop"
