I'll be doing mine this week :p
Yep, one is water cooled and the other uses a Zalman 9500...no spacers.

bigblockmatt, it's the exact same logic why people take off the shim on GPU/VPU.

Other than flatter surface as others have mentioned, the IHS doesn't spread the heat as well as if you have a well designed copper base HSF.

It's all about getting the heat our of the core as fast as possible. The more directly a cooling device can get to the core, the better the cooling.

Some random picture I grabbed off Driverhaaven to show the shim on 7800GTX. Just another one of those annoying stuff that lowers cooling for the sake of safety which enthusiasts don't care about.

I've seen countless people damaging their X8x0s and 7800s because their blade scratched against the chip packaging which contains wire traces.

When I removed my shim off the R350 it was faily simply, you just need to a thin blade to slit in while keeping the blade edge pointing upward against the shim. Once the gap has been created you can then use any thin non-sharp edge stuff to lift/peel the shim off.
I like the new dental floss idea people are talking about here tho.

The process(and risks) are extremly similar to lifting the IHS off discussed in this thread.

i took the shim off of my 9700pro when i watercooled it and the temps dropped a extra 8c from when the shim was on.

i dont have the guts to do it to my 7800gt, plus my temps are running 43c idle and 49c full load.
