Ken's X2 IHS removal

Post by kenc51 »

Well........I started cutting with the razor blade......then I cut into the chip ](*,)
I could have sworn I killed it....So I put it back into the mobo....no boot, nothing..... cue brown pants

I reset the bios as all is well.....but it's not done yet! My hands are still shaking BIG TIME!!! --> ~500euro.....

I've got ~30% done......I'm going to fininsh this in an hour or so.....I need to calm down....my hands are sweating....my heart is pumping and I'm a complete wreck LOL

I WILL FINISH THIS TONIGHT!!!!

It's alot different to the Celeron "removal" -> I killed that on purpose....I don't want to kill this chip, sorry for this pointless post, but I need to vent off some steam B4 I go back to this LOL

Pics will follow (dead or alive)

wish me luck!

So I used my trusty tweasers.....and POP! :)

TOLEDO NAKED.........:mrgreen: (sorry for the bad pic, but I don't care...IT'S DONE!)

Image
I'm running dual prime now.....temps look very good 8)
Max OC may have to wait till 2moro as it's 4am here......but I still have beer left sooo ;)

:edit:
I also used dental floss to finish off the last bits

:edit again:

:edit:
I've only had 4 beers in the last 6hrs! :)
I was quaking when I cut all 'round and it didn't come off......flashback!

My photography skills? Once the IHS came off the last thing on my mind was that photo.....all I cared about was seein the bios asap LOL

TEMP UPDATE (dual prime - will test later with rthdribl running too)

OLD (also dual prime)
~38C - cpu
~36C - chipset

:edit:
Vcore is actually lower here so temps are lower naturally....forgot sorry :oops: -> Will test again with same vcore later

NEW
29C - cpu 8) --> yep that's right!! 30mins dual prime!!!
40C - chipset????

oh also, this is with my fans @ ~1000rpm so can go lower!
:mrgreen:

:edit:

Thanx mate.....it was a bitch....but WHOOT!!!

now testing 2.7GHz with 183 divider and 1.52v ---> 30mins dual prime
~2.72GHz was max max B4

Update
NO extra overclock......I tried 2.75GHz -> fails dual prime in ~2mins (same as b4) -> tried upto and incl. 1.6v
BUT
now testing 2.65GHz with 1.52v (will try lower vcore)

temps
31C = CPU 8)
34C = Chipset

With 1.57v (old setting) - cpu temp is 33C - old was 38C

So removing the IHS lowered temps by ~5C = but I mayby able to run alot lower vcore, thus lowering temps even more :)

:edit:
temps with dual prime and 5 loops of 3dmark
34C = CPU
37C = Chipset
42C = GFX
+ with all fans @ only ~1000rpm
Sweet......!

Keep in mind guys , I'm new to OCing.
Why are you taking the IHS/IMS off? I'm going to guess for better cooling
Won't one stand a better chance of crushing the chip as the IH spreaders are supposed
to take about 70 [AMD]-100 [Intel] pounds of force while the chips them selves won't?

Glad things turned out for you.

I just editted the above posts with more temps! (see bottom)

The IHS (intergrated heatspreader) Does protect the core, but it can trap heat and increase temps. Some people who remove it can OC even more, but some gain nothing.
It's hit&miss if you get lower temps or more OC.

In my case it was lower temps (alot lower)

It is very risky and not worth it unless your prepared to kill the chip (which I wasn't - ~500euro :shock: )

It's more a penis extension than anything else LOL

And yes you have to be VERY carefull not to crush the core, you need a hfs/waterblock which bolts on, otherwise the hsf won't fit

Look @ the pic of the core....see the little brown things?
Well if you cut too deep or slip, they can be broken off very easilly!

You use dental floss to finish off the last bits of sealant......everything under the IHS is very delicate.......

:new temp update:
I've lowered my vcore to 1.48v but temps still stay @ 32C with dual prime
my temps only raise by 2C with 3d (gfx watercooled aswell)

I LOVE this new waterblock!!! 8)

Just curious about the Alphacool Nex WB you're using.
How well does it compare to top WBs like Swiftech Storm, DD RBX/TDX, DD Maze4, D-Tek/Whitewater?

And is it a high or low restriction waterblock?
I'm in the market now to find a new WB for my upcomming rig.
My current rig uses a Silverprop Cyclone Evolution V2.0 which compared well to Maze4, but I'll need an even better one.

[EDITED]NM, I just found your thread.

You can get the same block as me, or either the swiftech storm or apogee.
The two swiftech and the Alphacool are the best you can get.........apart from the silver plated blocks which are not available and cost way too much.

If your using 1/2" tubing I'd say Swiftech is best....

I've removed the IHS on my 148 and it dropped temps 18C load, but now you're making me wanna do it on my opt165... just sold my opt170 and couldn't bear to cut that one off. I may have to do it on this 165 b/c I'm tempted. I feel like throwing a lotta volts to it. I'm on a switchtech storm.

Not if you use a aftermarket cooler :P
