personal preference. HTPC relies more on the capture device, since you do not want one that doesnt process the MPG on card. hauppauge cards do, dunno about the others. I know ATI AIW cards DO NOT.

You can run a HTPC on minimal processor speed with a good capture card. Spend more money on hard drives - TONS of space needed! and memory.

Yes the down side from Intel is the heat issue with their dual cores. I think a Optron 165 or X2 3800+ is a better choice as it will run much cooler, and cooler means less noise from cooling fans.

the new intel 805 seems to have a lot of potential. what do you think? it's cheaper than x2 but it got a good performance as well. would it be a good choice as well?

I think so.....But Infinite is right, Intel are hotter chips and do require more cooling, but in most cases your not going to overclock, so you can actually lower the default voltage to lower temps.
Also the lower end chips don't use too much power so cooling/noise shouldn't be an issue.
It depends on your case too....if you get a case to fit the Zalman HSF then you can have a very quiet system without paying that extra premium that AMD charges for their dual cores....(but AMD is the better chip, just costs too much)

MMH, i got to ponder about this for a bit more.

BTW, on a similar note, what about the hardware encoding tv tuner, is that important?
