Cable vs. DSL ...I'm Mad Again!!

So, I am moving this fri into an apartment complex. Last night i went to sign up for the cable TV and cable modem. After talking with two different people, come to find out they dont offer it to the complex...why the hell not!?!

The tv part sux but i can deal with it. The thing that really pisses me off is the internet part. NO CABLE MODEM! I have to settle with DSL. I have had both and I like cable much better. Its so much easier to deal with setting up and changing things around. I HATE AT&T Yahoo DSL. Setting it up is a pain in my butt.

So, we are gonna have 4 people with 4 computers hard wired and one computer wireless. We are thinking about getting the Elite Package from AT&T. You all think this will be good enough for us? There will be atleast 2 people playing BF2 at the same time on the internet, sometimes 3. Ive got a mid level router, do you think it would be helpful to invest in a high level router? I am gonna just daisy chain the wireless router in the mix. (wireless doesnt need anything special at all, just basic interent looking).

Ok first off check if SpeakEasy has any support in your area, they have awsome support and will let you do what you want with your bandwidth. You want to run a server go for it! They also have competitive costs to other providers the advantage being you dont need to have a phoneline too. I have two lines through them, they suck but thats because Bell South does not maintain their copper and has nothing to do with Speakeasy.

Any basic 4 port router will do just so long as it has DHCP, NAT, and wireless if you want it.

AT&T Yahoo DSL? Up here in Oregon they push Qwest MSN DSL. However, I found out that I could pick my own ISP which provides me with considerably better service for uptime (e.g. People on MSN complain about being dropped about once a month, something I have not experienced in over 3 years). If Yahoo is the ISP for AT&T, maybe see if you can get a different ISP?

well, speak easy says that they can only service me with a T1...which would be cool, but unneeded and would kill the budget...(t1 runs about 450...)

I currently use SBC DSL at my apartment and at my mother's house and my father's house. Why not sign the year contract and save a couple bucks? Hell, what I did was I got the low end package, signed for a year, then I bitched up a storm when I kept losing connection at random intervals throughout the day and the night. Then they bumped up my bandwidth for free. I went from 40KB/sec to 150KB/sec and still pay $15 a month for DSL ($41.21 total with basic basic phone service). As far as a router, I use a Netgear Wireless G router and the think is ok, but I'm used to Linksys. You shouldn't have a problem integrating the router into the mix, but the problem is SBC will now send you a 2wire modem that has it's own built in NAT. You have to set the modem to bridge mode (which is a ******* pain) in order to get the damn thing to work. If you can request a modem without the NAT/Firewall, I'd do so.
