Fan help

Post by Merlin »

I ordered the wrong fan for my cpu. I ordered a four prong and I think I have to have a three. Is there a problem with running the CPU fan direct from the PSU without connecting to the MOBO?

no, there shouldn't be at all. the only problem you will probably encounter is not being able to monitor the fans speed. if that is an issue, there are several types of connectors available, ones that simply have a connector for fan monitoring, ones that convert 3 prong to 4 and vice versa

Cool, thanks. I ordred the SLK-900a and a SUnon 92mm 48 CFM fan. I would have gotten the panaflo from the heatsink factory but I didn't want to pay freight twice and I didn't see the SLK900a at the heatsink factory, or maybe it was 35 . SVC was sold out of the PAnaflo and had the SLK900a for 20. What can I say I am an instant stisfaction guy. I plan on cutting a hole in the bottom of the case to bring in more cool air and help push the air up to the top of the case for venting anyway so I'll get the Panaflo next time and swap fans.

Something that i have noticed is the lack of selection and availability on certain sites. The heatsink factory had the SLK-948 for $36.99 + shipping, i bought it from Newegg for $39.99 and free shipping.
Last week I was looking for water blocks to review, I could buy a block from one site, but needed something they didn't have, so i'd have to go to another site, they wouldn't have something else i needed.... it was driving me crazy. i can't see paying $4 to ship something that cost me $7.50.

I hear you. I am waiting till I have enough extra $$ to buy all the fans I need at once.

I put my SLK on and I am blown away!!! My idle temps before were 40'c with a load temp of 52'c. My new idle is 32'c and I run CPU Burn-in v1.01 for 20 min and my temps was 36'c. It dropped back down to 32 in about 3 min. Is 20min. on CPU burn in with error testing off a good measure or do I need to run it longer?

Yeah! I thought the one I had was good. I mean its solid coper with very thin fins and all but I guess it some other problem that can't be seen. That or the fact that my new one takes a 92mm fan that moves about 18 cfm more than the old 80mm fan I had.

Thermalright makes the best Heat sinks out there. I am very happy that this worked out for you and your temps are so good.
I'm looking forward to doing a review on their new XP-120. I can honestly say that performance wise, thermalright is as close to W/C as you can get.

On my second system with the Thermalright SLK800 and Thermaltake Smart fan, I can get my temps down to some water cooled system temps........... But boy is that sucker loud turned up on high speed............. Even now I can hear it over all the other stuff running in my computer room............ 8) And I've got 3 systems running, 2 with water cooling and countless case fans.............. And the Smart fan can still be heard from under the desk.............

Bio: i hear ya too, o wait thats my slk800 with a TTSF2, its loud as hell but it does work, keeps my cpu down to ~40c and thats not bad for a cpu that puts out as much heat as mine does.
