Overclocking (in general)

Hey guys. I've been reading a lot about overclocking and such from you guys, and I really think it would be helpful to learn the basics of it. Ive got a P4 ht 3.0ghz processor in my Dell 8300, and a Pentium M something or other in my Mom's Gateway laptop. Once I build my new PC (sometime this summer, I'm planning on getting some dualcore intel processor for it. Hmmm...

Now, how would I go about overclocking those? I'm completely clueless as to where to start with this..

Thats why I'm turning to you guys. You guys all have more experience w/ this stuff than anybody I know -- who better to turn to than the best!. I've seen some of the screens you posted Apop, and I think I might have a slight clue as to whats going on, but not enought to actually do anything effective.

If you guys have any tips, advice, tutorials or anything of the sort, Lemme know so I can slowly work my way into this.

well, unfortunately, you can't OC with any of the big retail pc's because the mobo that's in those system does not have the feature for OC. To OC, your best option would be building your own system, so you can choose the best parts, and components that will allow you to reach the max potential.

You could try using "clockgen"
http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php

It might allow you overclock a little.......but as mentioned b4, you need a motherboard that will allow your change the voltages and config various "bits" of the motherboard/ram etc.

i use RM clock it only allows u to throttle the PC.

well, Once I get around to my summer build (donno if it's gonna happen), I'll look into it a bit more. I'm thinking I'm either gonna get a conroe dualcore or like 3.6 ghz cpu from intel. Thanks for the help guys

im sure you could get a faster one once conroe is out. Pentium prices are goin down the drain, i think u've seen my pirce thread

yea i have. I'm doubting I'm even going to be able to build. Even if I did, the computer wouldn't even be in my room or considered mine.

Oh well. Conroe may change my parents minds pricewise! I doubt it tho.

dude dont complain even if you have to share it with your whole family...atleast your not like me where i can barely run AA on my stupid laptop... lol you know how it is cause youve used it before...anyways im gonna be getting a new computer too...and i just need to figure out whether im building or buying from dell

oh by the way anyone know wehre the stupid powercords go when you put a computer back togetehr cause me and spit took one apart the otherday and put it back together but we dont know where each individual power cord goes...

The power cables will only go in one way......if you think your forcing it in...then it doesn't fit.......
what does the ends of the cables look like? They could be for the power switch on the case......if they are......we might need to know the make and model of your pc.
