Trying to install Catalyst 4.8 Drivers on Laptop

Post by BrotherKung »

I already downloaded the DH Mod Tool 2.0b
however, after modding files, it still pops up with the INF error
I use a toshiba satellite A70
With a Mobile Radeon 9000 IGP
Can the catylyst drivers still work with an IGP?

I know that Patje had some issues with the IGP series... As stated on that page he knows that Cat 4.7 drivers work with his latest mod tool. Try downloading Cat 4.7's and see if they work. There might be an issue in the CAT 4.8's that needs to be fixed in his program.

If you download and install CAT 4.7's and it works like a charm drop Patje an e-mail and let him know the issues on CAT 4.8's

His e-mail is [email protected]

I'd see if 4.7's work first though, because his site states:
Update 09/06/04: I've put v2.0b online which fixes the modding with the IGP series. So you should be able to install Catalyst 4.7 and beyond.

Ugh. I installed 4.8's on my laptop and it's completely disabled all acceleration - according to the ATI control panel, AGP is even turned off entirely. Obviously this is impossible since I can see stuff on my screen, but obviously 4.8's are a little cranky with that mod tool.

wirehead -- did you uninstall your old drivers and use a driver cleaner?

I have no problems like you mentioned on the control panel. Run some benchmarks and see how the performance is now. Might just be a control panel flaw.

Eh...no, I didn't uninstall the old drivers. I've never had to do something like that before... I'm currently trying the 4.7's and I'll see if they work right. If not, then I'll uninstall everything, then try 4.8's again.

I can't do benches or anything because nothing that requires acceleration will run - neither D3D nor OGL, so I know it's not just the control panel.

I'd uninstall the old drivers and then run driver cleaner to make sure everything is gone. First you need to uninstall the drivers from the control panel than reboot and after that run the program.

Pretty simple and works great from my expierence. Usually you don't have to use something like this, but when modding drivers for a desktop to a notebook it is best to use a cleaner.

Just my $0.02

Sounds good. I'll try it after dinner with driver cleaner. I just uninstalled the 4.8's, installed 4.7's, same manifestation. The "SmartGart" feature on the driver control panel shows AGP as "off" entirely. If I change it to 8x or 4x it says it'll have to restart, then when I restart, it's still "off".

I'm too hungry to futz with it at the moment, but hopefully I can get it working after food. I'd like to pick up whatever FPS I can get.

Also, any thoughts on the Omega drivers? I noticed the 4.7's are out - and I had previously run these successfully. How would you say they stack up compared to the Catalyst 4.8's etc? I don't want to spend a long time getting the catalyst drivers to work if I could get the same or better performance from just installing the Omega drivers in the first place.

Thanks...

Ok, after running both cabcleaner and drivercleaner, everything works fine. The catalyst 4.8's are up and running, no apparent problems but I basically just played some UT2K4 to make sure it was working at all. It seems a little faster than the old MR drivers.

Thanks!
