question bout resolution

Post by Dragon_Cooler »

Why is it that in some games when i up my resolution it increases my fps?

like in COD and COD:UO when i go from 1280x1024 to 1600x1200 i max out in fps. A couple other games of mine have done that too and i have always wondered that.

it shouldn't... what are you using to see the FPS increase?

well i dont really count the fps... its just a major increas in smoothness. i go from jittery (like low fps) to extremely smooth motion. I have had a couple friends report the same thing. and they have used fps counters and have seen an increase. no aa/af changes

I personally dont use aa/af if i am on a high res 1280x1024+, the change isnt worth the fps decrease.

is 1600x1200 the native/recommended resolution for your monitor? It could be that your monitor just performs best at that resolution...This could explain why the game play is smoother at 1600x1200... but I'm not sure the actual FPS would increase. I'd be interested in seeing some screen shots of the FPS increasing with higher resolution because that part doesn't make sense since your video card has to work harder to output the higher resolution. But maybe someone else has a better explaination...

with any CRT or LCD if your FPS is too high like over 100 then you can get tareing where your movement is so fast that it stops rendering the frame your on and starts with the next one. This can make it seem jittery. by turning on vsync that will go away but drop your FPS to the refresh rate of your monitor.

I think infinitevalence has the right idea, try enabling vsync in your games at the lower resolutions. You might want to check your current refresh rate settings first though and set them to as high as your monitor/video card can handle.
