Tales of the unexplained

Post by DMB2000uk »

So when i was building my friends new computer with him (OK i guess you'll want specs, see below :P )

AMD 4600+ X2 AM2
Zalman CNPS 9500
2 GB Gskill 667Mhz DDR2 (4-4-4-12)
Asus M2N32-SLi-DLX nForce 590 SLi
BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB
320GB SATA II 7200rpm
Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Black
Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU
Asus DRW-1608P3S 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)

...we got to the point of installing windows after waiting around for it to format a 320GB HDD, so far so good, but the windows install kept crashing out at random files, the disc was brand new and so was everything else. After several attempts we got a BSOD, while in install!?!?!? Looks like faulty RAM, so we tried swapping the RAM round and independent sticks but no luck. I relaxed the timings to 5-5-5-15 and still no luck.

There was plenty of airflow in the case as it was, but later that day my mate decided to get a house fan and blow it in the case with the side off. What do you know, the install completes, so he takes off the fan and closes the case and the RAM passes 6 hours of memtest with the timings back at 4-4-4-12.

What the hell is up with that? He's had no problems with it since.

Try installing the latest bios. The M2N32-sli deluxe has been having trouble with ddr2 800 memory and while you don't quite have that it would probably be a good thing to try doing anyhow. I also had problems with my computer giving a bsod and crashing durring the install, but I ended up fixing it by using a different disk :? .

i had daily BIOS updates on the M2N and the early versions were down right ugly. Anything after 0404 should be good to go and I personally like 0406 for overclocking. Now they are up to 0603, which just came out on 6-29-2006.

here is the link to the ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe 0603 BIOS: ftp://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock ... SLI603.zip
