where to begin?

Post by fenriswolfr »

for the comp in my sig.. what should I do for PSU, case, cooling. I don't care for looks/noise etc. looking for cheap(er) but sufficient. What should I do? what do I need to buy? CPU comes with fan, I haven't picked out a case or PSU yet. What else do I need to buy, this is my first time building.

Look at Antec, OCZ, or Fortron for PSU. What is your budget for those items in a better question

I'm thinking about $100 for case/PSU and then whatever else I need for under $100.

yeah, thanks, that's about what I'm looking for, actually like right on. What else do I need to get for cooling, do I need to buy (extra) fans, how many?, heatsinks etc? CPU comes with fan.

well you need an additional 120mm for that case. And a good cpu cooler with needed fan.

Here this is good

This is good fan

I haven't been on Air cooling for a while, water hear for the quiet, so I'm nopt that much help without doing much research

If your not overclocking, the cooler that comes with the cpu will do fine and even if you want to OC later, you can but a heatsink later.

If your going to run more than two HDDs then you might want a second 120mm fan for intake (that case has one for exaust already)

Basically all you need is listed above, except the motherboard, cpu, memory and gfx card.

I won't be overclocking for now, I'm trying to save money now, do more with it later. So I just need it to run normally. Does this mean I do not need to get the cpu cooler that dicecca112 suggested (as of now), but still the fan?

you said you don't care about noise? if not then the cooler that comes with the cpu will do fine! (it includes a fan too)

I'd also say you'll be fine with the single case fan that comes with the case.........unless you add more hdd's.....adding hdd's will mean they will get hot and increase the interior case temps.....but a single hdd wouldn't cause much probs. If your cpu is going to be stock, you could also think about undervolting it to save power and reduce temps ;)

temps are not too important when not overclocking and not using uber highend stuff.........the cpu will run @ ~50C under stress.....they are safe upto and over 60C

Pricing
Mobo - I still don't know about this one (trying to keep prices down right now), whether I should get the $200 AM2 or the $100, it seems to be between the nvidia 570 and nvidia 590 chipset, so I don't know really what I should do here, but..
CPU - 200
RAM - 50 (probably will just put in 512 for starters - upgrade lots later)
HD - 60
OD - 40
c/psu- 120
gfx - not sure if I actually need to get one now until I get the geforce 7900 or not, but if I do I'll buy extremely low end, if so..$40
total
with $200 mobo and gfx card = $710 (within price range... kinda)
so $610 with $100 mobo and gfx or under 600 without.. I think I can do this.
I just gotta throw in a free OS.. and I'm good to go?

Use the stock CPU fan that comes in the box (make sure your AM2 X2 4200 says RETAIL).

If your case doesn't have a fan on the back (inside back), add one at least... maybe even one on the bottom front (inside front) if possible (It might come with one on the side also... if not thats ok).

Edit: If your getting the one linked, it comes stock with a fan on the back, I'd probably grab one for the front slot though, doesn't look like it has one.
