How to record shows on a laptop
Okay well i just ordered a dell inspiron 1505e with media center windows. I want to be able to record shows on it, was i supposed to get a TV tuner for it ? I forgot. Can i put it in myself maybe and upgrade ?
Hang on, apop didn't research before suggesting that part!
The Dell laptops only have ExpressCards now, and that TV tuner is a PCMCIA slot one, meaning that it wont fit in your new laptop.
You'll have to look for a USB only one, like these. Alot more messy, but the only viable option as i haven't seen any expresscard solutions yet.
*edit* it seems that avermedia do do a expresscard TV tuner, but that wasnt it and its not on their site, but again i cant find any resellers for the states (but i can for the UK

The AverTV ExpressCard is bundled with PVR software that enables time-shifting, scheduled recording in Mpeg1/2 format, plus still image capture. There's a 75Ohm coaxial port for an aerial, plus S-Video and composite inputs. An infra-red remote control is also supplied. Forgot that the Dell model he has uses the ExpressCard format... damn technology changes get ya every time!
thank you guys for all the responses. im glad i didnt order it yet =). i guess ill have to get an external one then.
i checked a tv tuner by ATI (used the link you guys provided me with). It costs about 70 bucks, i have no experience with there things so i dont really know if its good. It seems to recieve a poor rating :/. So what do you guys think?

By the way my dell laptop just arrived. it looked really good except one side was flabby i had to do some gluing myself. that i would forgive dell because they have cheap laptops. BUT, what pissed me off was the crapware on my comp that i got. holy shoot i think i spent like half an hour deleting stuff. whats funny though is that i got bit defender pro right before doing the deleting. When i tried to delete something called "Wild tangent" or something of the like, which was part of dell crapware, bit defender notified me that the program was trying to alter registry so it could run on start up. then i ran a scan and it was found again and i had to delete it. now its gone. DELL YOU ARE SELLING MALLWARE WITH YOUR COMPUTERS NOW HUH? GOOD LUCK WITH THE STOCKS.
ill pay the couple extra hundered next time and order another company. maybe someone who doesnt feel the need to put crap on my computer that i didnt ask for.

hey at least your Dell laptop looked right.. When I got my Dell M1710 from them the font and icon sizes were all jacked up and it looked like complete ass at the native 1920x1200 resolution. Not to mention Dell doesn't have XPS wallpaper that large, so they stretched it to fit the screen. I'll tell you what my first impressions when I turned it on for the first time were all negative after registering Windows MCE to myself.
i remember even a few years back they werent as bad as they are now. i wonder what smartass is in charge of this stuff, and if common sense is no longer required when you work for a company as large as dell.so i guess... i got lucky ? lol "(.

Wild Tangent actually used to be a program used to download specific episodic games. Those couple aren't made now, I've no idea what it's doing on there.
