2.5" USB Enclosures

Post by NAiLs »

I'm curious if any of you folks know of a 2.5" USB enclosure.

I'm picking up a 100GB 5400RPM Toshiba ATA100 drive for dirt cheap (new) and want to use it as portable storage. I surfed around for some enclosures, but I ran into too many that didn't include the double USB connectors for more power (I hear the 80GB+ 5400RPM drives need a bit more power), or they are cheaply built and don't have any shock protection. My current portable drive has fallen a few inches on the ground before, but it has a bit of shock protection to help with that. Stuff happens! :P

I'm looking to spend ~$25 on one if need be.

Thanks!

-Brian

P.S. This is the drive here:

I done a quick search and couldn't find any......All I could find was enclosures which use an external PSU......non that used only USB for power. I only checked newegg and legit shopping though.

sorry

I've been using the one below for about two years now. Can't say that it has any shock protection but all power is pulled from the USB ports with dual plugs. Very happy with it.

ohh crap....I was checking 3 1/2" drives

laptop drives work fine with any usb enclosure!
I have 2 cheap enclosures with 5400rpm drives.........I think you'll only need the second cable for a 7200rpmp drive.
Just make sure you don't have too many devices plugged into the usb ports at once....since USB2 can only supply so much power

ohh and shock protection is done via the hdd itself not the enclosure...I have dropped one of my soo many times and it's still fine

That's actually one I had in mind if I couldn't find anything else. Glad to see someone else using it and giving it decent word! :)

I just read that some enclosures had a bit of extra cushion incase you dropped it. I realize the drive itself has some protection, but more is always nice! :)

I might just go with the one wicked posted as I had my eye on it before.

Thanks guys!
