G'day!

Post by Yapa »

Hello from downunder!

Just recently found this site via google while searching for an article on the xfx 7600GT extreme.

Very nice site and love the reviews! read quite a few now!

I have a very old system, going back to 2000/1 ... abit KR7A raid, XP2000+, 1.3gb DDR, 6600GT, 120GB raid0... pretty quick system back then..... apart from the video card, think I had a Geforce 2 something back then...

Havent upgraded because I stopped playing games about 2 years ago... and only quake it sometimes :D but a new game (supreme commander) is coming out early 2007 and this system just wont cut it, the cpu at least wouldnt!

So yesterday upgraded to a budget lowcost system, but still much faster than this old rig. Its a asus p5l 1394, e6300, 1gb DDR2, 7600GT extreme, 200gb sata2 and thermaltake mambo case.

Now I need some help on overclocking! I know the basics... but not exactly the steps.

A good motherboard is needed to increase the FSB from what I've read? As i'll have stock cooling I dont want to go past 2.5ghz most likely... actually I dont know how much is possible on stock cooler?

Should I raise the voltage a bit? What about memory? etc... as far as I know, all I have to do is raise the FSB bit by bit... then when it becomes unstable u raise the voltage ?? while monitoring the temp... I have Kingston Value Ram in this machine, 533... how far could I go?

Anyway thanks for any help with the oc, nice forum :)

im not much of an Intel guy but id recomend another stick of that 1gb Kingston RAM you have. Supreme Comanders is most likely going to be pretty memory intensive. Also how did you manage 1.3gb of DDR? Its an odd number lol. Also after doing some quick google research it seems that some people have gotten pretty decent overclocks of the e6300 WITHOUT changing the vCore so mess with the clock rate, usually the heat doesn't rise too much unless you up the vCore, atleast thats from my experience. Keep in mind that C2D kicks the snot out of current AMD chips so its possible that Intel has them underclocked so they'll have room to increase performance once K8L comes out. Also good aftermarket coolers can be found for under 100 US dollars, for example check out the TT Cooler on the front page :-)
