Death of the Power Supply

Post by The Black Pumpkin »

Well, I've gotten a reputation with the handy man at work for being good with computers, so he brings all his personal pc problems to me. This one system in particular, has a Celeron 466 (I believe) oc'd to 581 with an Asus ME99VM board. I got this from the IT guy at work, gave it to the handy-man's brother, reinstalled windows for him, and now he gave to to the handy-man's wife, and now it doesn't work, gotta reinstall windows again. Anyway, I hook it up to see what's up, and BLAM!! Cloud of smoke out of the psu. First thing I think is, "Wow, that's cool!" Then, "Oh crap!"

Anyway, here's a nice picture of a blown capacitor in this "Real Power" 235w psu.

Anyway, would this 300w Sparkle psu be a good replacement?

They could probably get away with the 250w version, but it's only a little more with the sale.
AMD Opteron 1224SE "Santa Ana" = DFI Lanparty UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G
Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2 800 = Corsair CMPSU-750TX
Sapphire 4870 1GB = Sceptre X20WG-Naga 20" = Logitech X-530 5.1
Seagate 320GB (SATA II) x2 = Samsung SH-S203B (SATA)

Yeah, after reading various horror stories over the last few years, I wouldn't buy anything unless it was a good brand first, good model second. Too bad I don't have the spare change to replace the POS psu in my current comp, I just hope it doesn't kill everything before I can replace it.

I know Sparkle is a good brand but everytime I see one of their PSU's I think of Mr Sparkle from the Simpsons....

I hope no components suffered damage.
