who has an interesting car?

Post by eric m. »

i don't know how old the people are here, but i'm assuming many of you are over 16 and have a car. just wondering if anyone has an interesting car they want to share or talk about. post pictures too if you want. i like cars and i like to see the crazy things people do with them. traditionally, computer enthusiasts haven't really been the "car" type, but there are exceptions.

and if you have a really, really crappy car, post that too. it will make me feel better. thanks.

My crappy car: I have red 1992 honda civic ex, with the 1.6l engine, alloy wheels, moonroof, and spoiler. At first glance that would seem like a kick ass car but hold on. First off the hood has been dented in for at least 6 years from an ice storm we had. Second my car has been broken into 3 times since i got it so i dont have any stereo left, in fact the last guy made sure that i can put a new one in. I also had an accident in it 2 years ago and smashed in the driverside rear corrner leaving the bummper half on. The bummuper is held on by the mud flap. That accident also pushed the trunk out of alignment so it has not opened since. And to top all that off the car has 238,000 miles on it. time for a new car? yes i think so.

I guess I'm an exception to the car enthusiast world while loving computers.

I was more into computers until I began learning about my car a few years ago. I have learned a lot about how stuff works, what to watch out for, how to rebuild a motor (done it already), etc. I can't really talk about what's in my car, but I can say I have a 2000 Grand Prix GTP. I love it. Tons of low end torque to spank a lot of cars, while having a very nice horsepower curve. Only thing that sucks on the 3.8L is it practically falls on it's face at 100MPH unless you're modified. A few guys get to 130 in the 1/4 which shows the motor has much more potential over a stock motor. The 1/4 mile is where it counts though, not this "1 mile" race that a lot of idiots do to see who can catch up to who after the other car falls on its face.

Stock setup is: 3.8L v6 Supercharged
Horsepower: 240 @ 5200RPM
Torque: 280lb/ft @ 3600RPM

I know I have a lot more than what's specified. No I don't think my car is god, but I think I am and will be a pretty good match against a lot of cars out there today. I just have to fix my fueling issues before I can go any further.

no dude... that's 130MPH in the 1/4 mile, not in 3 miles down the road. That's fast! A stock GTP will do about 92-94MPH in the 1/4. It only weighs about 3450lbs, but still, it's a boat. The fastest anyone has taken the 3800 motor is ~173MPH. That's pushing it a lot! Stock GTPs will stop at 126MPH due to the electronic governor unless you get a reprogrammed PCM.

If I were to take mine in the 1/4, I'd probably hit about 102-105MPH easy.

When I was in high school, I had a 1985 GMC S-15 (This was in 1998-2000). The O-rings were bad, so I had to feed it a quart of oil a week, no joke. Every time I filled up, I added oil, and there was no leak! It just burned it. The truck had no choke, so on a cold winter morning I put a brick on the gas pedal to warm it up (It wouldn't go if it wasn't warm). The clutch pedal was like a foot off the floor, and it had to be pushed ALL THE WAY IN before it would catch. Even seasoned drivers had trouble taking off in my truck. I couldn't afford new tires, so I kept repairing old ones that needed replaced. I'm not kidding when I say I was changing a tire at least once a week. I honestly can't remember how many miles it had, but it was over 150,000. It had "2-45" air conditioning (2 windows, 45 mph) and no heat (sometimes). I could only get past 50 mph if I was going down hill. If you opened the hood, you would see duct tape and baling wire. Everytime I went through a puddle I was stuck for half an hour because water would get under the distributer cap and shut off the engine. Finally, in 2000, my mom was driving it and it started blowing smoke. She pulled over, looked under the hood and found oil in the radiator, so she drove it home. That was the end of my truck, my first car.

OMG amy. i don't know if your post belongs more here or in the "most embarrasing moment" thread. :) just kidding. i think most of us have been there with the crappy car thing. i know i've had a couple myself. not that bad though, geez.

the pontiac GTP is actually a sweet car. i go to this 1/4 mile track at the california speedway (NASCAR track) once in a while, and the supercharged GTPs have always impressed me. there isn't really another domestic "family" type car that can touch it, except for maybe the dodge SRT-4, which is starting to saturate the track since they are so cheap. obviously mustangs, camaros, and trans ams are always really fast but those are boring. everyone has those. there is a little GTP club that meets up sometimes at the speedway and i got to check out their cars once. i never have liked domestic cars but i really respect those things. plus they're fast.

i used to have a fast car (subaru wrx) but i was getting in trouble with it too much. speeding everywhere, always wanting to make it faster, etc. it got expensive and dangerous. so i sold it last june and got a scion xb the first day they were released here in california. i've had it over a year now and i love it. it's a cheap car. not fast, but it is fun to drive and there is tons of room for friends and putting stuff in the back. i have even hauled my 100cc go-kart in the back on occasion (go-kart is for sale if anyone is interested, BTW).

i guess i'll post some pictures of my scion. i kind of got involved with an early scion enthusiast group and got into the same mess as i did with my subaru. i wanted to modify it and make it cool and win car shows. stupid, i know. but at the time it was fun. i was the first xb in america to have air suspension (july 03) and i had the lowest scion in america for a while until people started finishing their full custom show cars. at that time, i kind of got sick of trying to compete with the big budget shops and sponsored cars, so i put my car back to stock and just drive it around. cars eat up so much money, it's unbelievable. computers are way less expensive by comparison.

i'll post some pictures later. i also have a little 250cc ninja motorcycle i cruise around on sometimes. nothing fancy.

Well, can't say I own anything yet because I just turned 15, but hopefully I will get to drive my brother's truck...

My dad has a F-250 Super Duty Turbocharged Diesel, can't tell you what exactly the 1/4 mile is on it, but it has some damn fine acceleration :) I'm sure in a few months when I get my farm permit I will be able to tell you what it is

My brother fixed up a 1992 Ford F250 Custom, it's a 5-speed manual and it had over 250,000 miles on it when we bought it brand new, my dad gave it to my brother for free because he ended up spending many thousands fixing it up. It was green and rusty, etc etc... Now it has 290,000 miles on it.

It's a real beauty and even Chevy lovers say "Damn that's a nice truck even if it is a Ford" It's got a 460 engine (whatever that means) and it's about 325hp. It can pull a hell of a lot and gets 5-15mpg, 5mpg pulling a trailer with four-wheelers, 15 on the highway if you are very nice to it. He put dual exhaust on it and you about go deaf if he revs it up next to you. Many have tried to compare there truck to his and lost by many decibels :D

Now it's painted black, chrome nerf bars, chrome exhaust headers, etc. It's a really nice truck but I only have one picture of it, and it's through a window. It looks a lot better in real life especially after it's washed and waxed. My brother is really proud of his truck and he has reason to be.

Oh and by the way, it was pulling loaded hog trailers for those 250,000 miles before we got it.

Not sure what the 1/4 mile is on that either, but hopefully my brother will let me drive it, atleast part of the time, now that he's gone off to college and has a little car for an obvious reason, gas...
