E6300 SLOWWWWWWWWWWW

Ok, I installed f@h on the E6300 - just one instance for now - and it is SLOWWW!!! I have the p1808_Collagen_Brodsky_AMBER core unit running. 7/500 complete and it says I have 9d:20h:02m:31s left!!!

I thought it would run rings around my AMD 3000+...am I doing something wrong? Is this core just that huge? Because I am running Vista 64-bit?

I went back to the classic desktop because it seemed with Aero on, it would not show anything at all in the F@H window...go figure.

Oh and it is using the whole 1 cpu, 50%.

Any help is appreciated as always.

When did you start it?

Open the "folding.cfg" file with notepad and copy & paste it here.

I think the problem is Vista. FAH is only 32bit @ the moment, and Vista is 64bit, so it's running in emulation mode which is a bit slower. Also Vista could be using all your RAM.

I installed Vista the other day and it was using 1.5GB of ram while I was on the desktop and this was NOT a beta copy

My advice is either switch back to XP or install 64bit Linux and use the 64bit beta FAH.

Well it is down to 1day time now

I think it was the damn Vista interface with Aeroglass running.

I am back to the Windows Classic desktop, and it is chugging along.

If this keeps working ok, then I wil ltry and install 2 instances of it - 1 for each cpu. That could be fun

I saw they have a SMP beta for Linux!! I was thinking about giving it a whirl, but Linux is just not user friendly for stupid people like me :p Maybe, maybe.....maybe.....would be nice to have 1 program running and use both cpus.....maybe

I tried the Linux beta on 64bit Suse Linux......it wouldn't work for me.......i gave up quickly since I can't use this gfx card to fold with linux.

Linux is very easy to install and use. It can be hard to configure in some cases.
After installation your straight to desktop after reboot. Linux requires very little command line use nowadays. You should give it a try....just be patient with it, it takes a bit of adjusting that's all. (windoze becomes second nature to us all)

I would suggest Ubuntu 6.10 or 6.06 very easy to setup. It also has something called Automatix that can install things like drivers, codecs etc. I plan on trying to get SMP folding up and running over break, so I can help you if you need it.

Amber cores also fold slow on my machine (P4 D 3.2Ghz 64Bit running XP x64).

Gromacs Cores fold pretty fast on here.

I don't think it has anything to do with your OS, I believe it's the actual folding core itself.

Um Cypher I folding the same protien. And mines 1153 per frame or about 19hrs and 18min for the entire work unit. His is taking over 10X that long. Something is wrong.

make sure your running version 5.04 of folding, and not 5.02

Yeah, that may be one of my issues as well. I'm pretty sure I'm still on the v5.02 Client.

One day this week I'm going to try the 64bit SMP Folding client on my Linux machines. Hopefully their works for the Windows SMP Client is going good. Looking forward towards the release of a beta client for that.

I need some help with that! I'm sure I've got the right ISO (ubuntu-6.10-desktop-amd64.iso) and using vmware 5.xx. I messed with it for a few hours the other night but could never get the client to start. I'm a complete nub when it comes to Linux so if you could help me out that would be great. I've got two Core 2 Duo's here begging for that SMP client.

Knight Rid, Amber units run much faster on A64 than they do on C2D. I've got an X2 at 2.8GHz that rips through them a couple minutes faster per frame than my E6600 at 3.6GHz. When it comes to Gromacs though...look out. The E66 is 9-15mins faster per frame than the A64, depending on the project.

dropping from 9 days to 1 day for folding time on the same thing is why I thought it was the vista interface with aeroglass ( aka CRAP ).

I might let it run this way till after Christmas, then try to mess with Linux again *sigh*

If it were as simple as running a program to install, then double clicking to run - I would have no problems

( Windows works that way ;) )

I did have it running before with Ubuntu, and you had to unpack it to a directory in the CONSOLE window since it is not on the auto download and install thingy ( at that time, may have changed by now I dunno ), then you have to go back to the CONSOLE windows and manually enter the line to run it...lik .// something or other or //. something like that - it was goofy. I could never get it to auto load every reboot, so I just never rebooted

just make sure you are in the right directory, or if you put it in the desktop one then all the files will show up on the desktop. You also can not close that console window or it closes F@H

argh - windows - double click exe, installs itself, run program, set options, add to startup folder to run every tiem you reboot - done

THAT is what Linux needs to work on - not the graphical interface, the installation of programs - if it would be that easy, I would not have a Windows computer in the house.

FAH in Linux is easy.
Download the Linux client to your home directory. create a folder called folding and put it in there. R-click the file and goto properties, set the permissions to allow "execute"
R-Click the file and goto extract here.

Then open a terminal window via the start menu, type "cd ~" to goto you home directory (your proly in there already when you open the terminal screen). then type "cd folding"

now all you need to do is type "./FAH****** -config

OR if you ticked the box for "execute" all you need to do is d-click the FAH exe file (this only works after you config the client for 38296)

I found out the 64bit version wouldn't work for me because I hadn't got some libraries installed........(it was a minimal install)

Well, I'm running Vista 64-bit with aero and it seems pretty fine. Ok maybe it's a little bit slower than on XP, but I don't mind. Maybe if you try running the console version?

When you first start out on some of the WU's, the time is sometimes exaggerated and can say like 196 days for the WU completion.
Maybe this is the deadline? It usually gets more accurate after half an hour for me
