Help!

Post by Tech_Greek »

Hey Guys,

Just visiting the web site after being on it at work a lot (some interesting articles).

I've got the following system;

Gateway GT5014
Pentium D 2.8 GHZ
2x1 GB KByte DDR2 Ram
BFG GeForce 7800 GT
XiFi Platinum Sound Card
ATI Tv Tuner

Stock 200 GB HD...

I believe that's the most part of it.

Now, the way I see it is that my machine should be a bit of a beast (granted its a 64 bit proccesor in a 32 bit os, and has a slower FSB) but I'm finding that it's getting about 34 FPS in FEAR with everything on at 1280 x 1024 (i'm looking at your articles and machines with lesser systems are scoring higher).

Is there something I'm doing wrong? All the drivers are up to date and bios are up to date.

The only thing I can think of is that the proccessor is bottle necking it but I'm not sure.

The last thing I can ask is if I can stick the newer series 775 Pent D into my motherboard (930 I believe) and I'm assuming I can't overclock due to the motherboard...also is it possible to change the motherboard out and keep the proccesor to overclock it?

Thanks for the site!

Actually mid 30s at that resolution is right were it should be from all the reviews I've seen

It depends, if the boards supports the 9x0 series, then yes you could. It also depends if Gateway uses a proprietary mounting system. New Boards would not fit. Best bet is to forgo the 9xo series and go conroe, the e6300 is only 183, and destroys all before it [/quote]

So,

On your website (it was the other day I looked) the 6800 GT was out performing my video card (BFG 7800 GT)

Currently the specs are set at;

GPU: 2100 MHZ
RAM: 425 MHZ

So I've overclocked it a bit...

So with the different motherboard could I drop this proccesor into it along into another case?

Do you have any links to NewEgg...price is a bit of concern as I'm into money problems right now and it's killing me that I dropped close to 3k on my whole system when I bought everything new and that was a few months ago and it's getting its ass handed to it in FEAR of all the games.

Also another thing, my brother has a GT5014 + BFG 7800 GT only and in BF2 he consitnetly gets 64 FPS with every on high on 1280 x 1024 and I'm getting 34 FPS in a 64 PLAYER server with the same settings, and I have more ram...

another key in this is the processor. Does he have an A64? Also did you have a graphic card of a different manufacturer in this before? Google Drive Cleaner pro, use it to remove the drivers and reinstall. And what article are you referring to?

I haven't really yanked the previous drivers, just did the right click on it in device manager and clicked update drivers just like I've done it since the good ol days...

This is the only video card that has been in this system, the other is built in video.

I just looked at my ram, the MHZ seems low, but its been a while...

Nope its stock. Updating drivers the way you did is wrong. They aren't the latest, got to here and download these and install ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/91.47 ... h_whql.exe

So...

What you are saying is just run the exe and setup file...or use the driver remover and install with the exe?

As far as the ram goes it's aftermarket ram, I had 3GB in here (512x2 OEM, 1024x2 KBYTE) but I sold the OEM'ers...

didn't see a FEAR bench in that. But whatever. Just run the exe in the drivers, don't bother with the Driver remover.

Average FPS = 32 Now

lol, I even tried overclocking it to squeeze more, only one more FPS came out of it.

And dropping it down to 1024 x 768 didn't do any good.

I also tried HL2 with everyone on, 1280 x 1024, got 50 FPS Average on the train in the beg level when looking at the guys, looking around I get 70 FPS...

I guess I underestimated FEARS toll on graphics...

Is there anything I can do to upgrade my system at this point? Or is it pointless and to just part it out and start over custom (I have done custom systems before, just had the money recentley on my Best Buy Credit Card to get all of this...don't ever get a BBY Credit Card bTW, I should have known that after working there...d'oh)
