in my defense you did list like 2 computers in the original post. In that case, get a can of compressed air and clean out all the air vents. you'd be suprised how gunked those can get after a while

Yeah, I know I did. I thought I labeled them as to what problem pertained to what though!

I shall do that. I know my old notebook was gunked up bad and I guess I wouldn't be surprised here. The basement is fairly dust free, but that's what I thought when I opened up my last notebook!

Weird. No changes made since my last post, SVCHOST crashed again last night. I've been on my laptop all day, core temps are 22-28*C now. Odd I might add. Granted right now SVCHOST is only taking up 8MB of RAM and 0-2% of the CPU, I think that's my heat issue right there. But what causes SVCHOST to not dump memory?

Something tells me it's this crappy Dell MiniPCI Wireless Card causing the problems. That was my hunch in the beginning, and the 4th log entry that I pasted almost confirms it. I did catch it disconnecting me from the internet just moments before it crashed once.

I think the problem is with RPC. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but it has to do with networking. I think RPC service crashed and took down the internet connection with it. Since it's an essential service, the PC crashed/rebooted.

There was viri a while ago (blaster, sasser worms) that attacked the RCP service and caused your PC to reboot when you connected to the web. This was fixed in SP1 but the symptoms look the same. Mayby spyware corrupted your system?

Did you try that system file checker? "start/run type "sfc/scannow"
Also you could use a Linux live CD for a while to eliminate M$ software as an issue...........

It might be time to reinstall

I shall do the system file check on Saturday when I'm home. I didn't bring my XP CD with me, so I can't do it right now.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if I have to reformat to be honest. I'm used to doing it at least twice a year on my system.

That's bare minimum though. I have done it 4x one year, and I have to redo my boss' computer every couple months too. Granted I like not having to redo my system though. I have about 30GB worth of data that I need to move off of my notebook before that happens.

Oh yea, I should have a different (free and better than what I have) Wireless MiniPCI card on the way. <3 hookups at Dell!

yea my notebook also needs tuning, i need a better cpu as well as better fan, cuz the temp of ma notebook goes up to like 80F sometimes higher, i tried speedfan but that also had almost no impact

I've actually had MANY things break the RPC.

One of the oddest situations was when I worked at Circuit City I installed a monochrome printer for our desktop on the bench (lexmark) and it leached into the RPC Protocol.

Fast forward three months later when I uninstall it and can't get anything to work and my comptuers freezing up.

I finally am able to dig into the logs without it locking up I found out that Lexmark had leached into the RPC Protocol and a simple reinstall of the drivers cured all my problems.

I could NOT fix this problem, even with a soft install, the RPC was corrupt. I ended up just leaving the lexmark drivers on there and installing a HP Printer.

Here's a tip for you...when your computer starts shutting down press the windows key + R (for the RUN COMMAND) and type in "shutdown -a" and press enter and it'll abort the shut down...I wish I would have known that way back when that virus came out that killed RPC...

Well, I got around to reformatting the pig (The Dell E1705) about a week or so ago. Same problems. I came home from work tonight only to find my computer rebooted. Things crash more than ever now too. My network drops a lot, programs just crash in general, etc.

Playing games is horrible too. When I play WoW, my framerate goes from 60-80FPS down to 10-15 for no reason. It will come back after a while and then go bad again. I was also playing some other games today and my frame rate dropped like nuts. I have AA set to 2x and AF set to 8x. Nothing big for a 7800 series video card. Texture quality is set to one notch below the highest.

So, network card and video card problems? I'm thinking so, but I have no way to verify this. The only thing that can be somewhat verified is the network card as services keep crashing and forcing reboots of my system.

Any help is much appreciated!!!
