I asked earlier about the best way to reformat my HD and I believe that the general consensus was to Quick Format it, so I'll go with that. Now, I'm going to reload WIN XP and it's the upgrade disc. I've got a WIN 98 disc with no key code (could not locate it) and I would like to know is that going to be a problem? I've never reloaded windows this way, so can I reformat my HD and then just reinstall WIN XP using the upgrade disc or will I need the key code from my WIN 98 disc to proceed?
Thanks in advance.

im pretty sure that u can just upgrade after reformat. i myself have reformated and upgraded to Xp Pro without a problem. let me warn u when u have upgraded ur system u will once get a notification that u have 30 days to register ur copy of windows. U might indeed not get that notification but im confidant that u should be able to upgrade without any problems. Let me know if this helps
As long as you use the windows xp upgrade dvd to reformat, and you have a version of windows on your drive now, you can install a clean copy after the format.
If you do not have a version of Windows on the hard drive now, either put one on, or you will need another windows cd ( your 98 should be fine ) to swap in to let them know you actually have an earlier version

Having problems reformatting my HD. I can't or it won't let me. What exactly do I need to do, in laymen's terms please, to accomplish this? I'm wanting to completely wipe my HD and start over from scratch.
In addition, I want/need to remove the partitions on my HD, so will reformatting allow me to do this?
Thanks,

start the computer - insert the windows DVD/cd - then RESTART the computer. If your compute is set up to boot form cd first ( which it should be ) then it will usually say - push a key to boot from cd - so push a key
if your computer is not set up to do this, the only way I know of is to go into your bios settings and change the first boot device to your dvd drive.
anyway - assuming your computer is set to boot from the cd/dvd first - then wait till the windows crap comes up - when you get to the screen that asks about a partition - DELETE ALL OF THEM - repeat - ALL OF THEM - each will have to be done individually along with like 3 key presses. After you delete ALL OF THEM - then CREATE a new partition. It should automatically put the largest size your drive can have, so tell it to create. Than install on that partition, and you are on your way to mind numbing hours of reading all of the Legit Reviews articles on your new speedy beast
