Vista Memory Usage

The company I work for has one Dell running vista... its a 3.4GHz Pentium D Processor with 2 Gb of memory and on board video (so Aero was not running). There were a few 'Vista Gadgets' running on the gadget bar, like CPU and Memory usage dials, RSS reader, Clock, picture slide show. IE7 was open to an internal webpage and minimized in the task bar.

When I opened up Task Manager to view the actual memory usage, I was not shocked by any means... it was right around where I expected.

It said:
590 MB In Use

Just wanted to share my first Vista experience!

sounds about right... what was the rating on the system and was this an RC version of full?

Thats 78 more megs of RAM than I have in my system at the moment LOL

No Vista for me, aleast till I build the next machine.

how much does your system memory usage relate to poor fps in games?

Yeah, I've been wondering that. Could the lower FPS in games be attributed to Aero Glass?

Not sure... I think they got this copy from Dell, so I imagine it is full version of Business Premium... don't know the rating either.

St. John, who led Microsoft's efforts to ensure that older games were compatible with Windows 95, said the root of the problem is in Vista's heightened security features. Simply put, the software doesn't seem to differentiate between noxious "malware" and innocent games. The software's parental control feature, for example, screens out family-friendly games that aren't rated, he said, adding that getting a grade from the Entertainment Software Rating Board is a hefty expense for smaller developers.

I'll be switching to Linux soon.

From what I heard, that's a "feature..." ROFL. I think Vista's SuperFetch loads a bunch of things it thinks you might need, so when you actually go to load the relevant program it runs faster. However, a side effect is higher memory usage. Once I get Ultimate for my desktop (aka once SLI is supported for 7900s) then I'll see how much of my 2GB it sucks down, and what it does to games.

I just did the upgrade from Windows XP to Vista Ultimate and the system is using 664MB with just the task manager and IE7 open...

I installed Vista Ultimate on my laptop, and after a few hours of playing around with it, I'm currently reinstalling XP x64 back on to it.

Vista just has way too much bloat for me, the navigation around the OS itself is horrid. When I set the machine to use the Windows Classic Skin/Theme, it should get all of the navigation aspects of it to Windows Classic as well. BitLocker is a joke, I just think the majority of all the "extras" is useless.

Their was however very little speed difference going from XP x64 to Ultimate x64 on a 1.6Ghz Turion64 X2 with 1GB of RAM.

Their's already been reports of the first Remote Exploit of Vista, and already a handful of security releases have already been out. They're already planning and starting to work on Service Pack 1. Maybe after service pack 1, or even 2 comes out I'll give Vista another try, until then I'm sticking with my 64bit XP.

The navigation around the OS is not that much different from XP... I really like the new search. I have over 20,000 pictures that I have taken for Legit Reviews and the new search cuts down the time looking for files and images drastically. I also like the new look and feel... Hell I've been using XP Pro since 2001, so this is a nice change. For this PC i do my multimedia stuff and for that this OS is ideal, so I'm happy with it. I just got rid of my upgrade and installed Vista Ultimate on two brand new Raptor X drives that I bought from Newegg with the rebate and am very happy with this install... I didn't think I'd notice, but RAID 0 seems to make some tasks faster..

Right now I'm posting this and listening to their sample music directory and am using 716MB of memory...

In the end it all depends on what your doing... I have Readyboost USB drives and they are pretty damn sweet too now that I can use them. I also love the sidebar... I've added Google Search and Weather found one online that can do my dual-core CPU and also monitor the memory. I also have custom slideshows and the RSS feeds I like all on my desktop. It's tight so far.

sounds like a fun time for me who likes to just mess around with the os and surf a lot in between gaming so I bet i'd like vista too bad we can't just a get a forum 'site liscense' and make legal copies of it lol.

seems to be... I'm going to write up a quick how to install vista article that is mostly pictures and no text as it's that simple and after I get that knocked out I might do some memory performance using 3dmark06 as my benchmark... use 512/1GB/2GB/4GB to show difference and throw in my readyboost USB key for shits and grins.

I've been running Vista Ultimate on my laptop for about a month. The machine has 2gigs of ram and shows 656megs ran with Eudora and IE7 open. Not a bad OS, the UAC can be a major PIA.
