Linux on a Laptop

I'm just wondering if any manufacturers write Linux drivers? I know there are plenty of third party drivers. I could use a basic laptop for schoolwork.

I doubt that the manufacturers are putting drivers out, but the lastest ubuntu live cd loads almost every driver for my HP dv2000t. It doesn't do the webcam and i haven't tested th front audio or the card reader. takes care of ethernet, wireless, video, sound, etc. I would download it and just stick it in and see what kind of device support you get straight off the live cd.

SuSe Linux picks up everything on my laptop. When installing It even advises me to enable encryption on my WiFi. After I enter my WPA password It's online and runs an update ;)

Ubuntu picked up all of mine as well on a Del 1705. I think you will find support for most everything you have right out of the box, and with a little help from others, you will find ways to run everything you need.
