Want to introduce myself

Having become dissatisfied with my old team I hope you folks will allow me to join you.

My name is Paul and my folding handle is armstpe. I am 67 years of age and reside in Chipley Florida. I am retired (not retarded as some folks think) and am completely hooked on folding. I will be moving my rigs to this team over the next day or so.

My rigs are as follows.
1. A64 3400 at 2.6Ghz folding on Windows (my everyday rig).
2. X2 3800 at 2.6Ghz folding the SMP client on Ubuntu linux.
3. Opteron 170 at 2.7Ghz folding the SMP client on Ubuntu linux.
4. Opteron 170 at 2.5Ghz folding the SMP client on Ubuntu linux.
5. A64 3400 at 2.6Ghz folding on Ubuntu linux.

All of my rigs except my everyday computer are ran caseless and are uATX to keep the number of parts needed to fold to a minimum.

So here's a big hello to everybody and wishes that our working together advances the medical field and is instrumental in defeating these terrible diseases.

Welcome to the forums and great to have you on the team. Cheers and glad to have someone with the same interests on the team! You are bringing a number of recent PC's to the team and for that I thank you for the extra horse power! 12+ GHz is a nice boost and a ton of processing power!

Well, that went good. Have all my rigs changed over. I did lose one SMP work unit but that was because of Stanfords mixup on client end dates in the linux client. Try as I might I have been unable to update my SMP clients without losing a work unit without setting the oneunit flag and waiting for the current WU to complete.

Just uploaded my first WU to this team so here we go.

I have spent the last six months scraping pennys to bring myself to where I am folding wise. I previously had an AMD XP minifarm but got tired of not being able to advance on my old team. Even with what I have now I was only 11th in PPD but was advancing. That was not my reason for leaving. I had been feeling for some time that the general direction the team was going did not make me happy. I have been searching for a new team for quite some time and have been kind of watching you folks. For some reason yesterday something (I don't know what) just didn't set right with me so here I am.

Welcome to the team and forums.

That was not my reason for leaving. I had been feeling for some time that the general direction the team was going did not make me happy.

That is how I came to be a legit folder.And have been happy here everysince I joined.I added work comps to the team so only 3 on my list are mine.

Have you tried using CentOS for folding? I want to get into SMP Folding, but I am very picky about the linux distributions that I run. I've tried Ubantu in the past and found it to be complete junk.

SuSe x86-64....minimal install and running "Run level 3" (init 3) FTW

I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux. I selected Ubuntu because it is directed to the casual user. They are trying to make it as user friendly as they can. I understand that the older versions of Ubuntu were pretty bad but I am happy with the latest mainstream versions.

Could probably improve the folding speed by modifying the Kernel as well.

You could re-compile the kernel using various optimisation switches and removing alot of junk but disabling unused stuff like CUPS etc would help even more!

The problem for me is that you can't stop and start the SMP client, it doesn't auto save.
For me, with my CPU it takes ~12hrs to complete a ~600pt WU. During midweek I only fold at night so I'm not going to mess around with that.

yes you can, at least with ubuntu, just hit Ctrl-C in the Terminal window

Nope, Standford says if you stop the client, it will start from the beginning again!
