6600GT's in SLi.....

Post by xXx Duffy xXx »

Im upgrading my motherboard and chip in the next week so that I can run SLi.

Specs will be as follows...

AMD Opteron 165 Dual Core @ 2.8GHz per core
ASUS A8N32-SLi S939 Motherboard
ASUS N6600GT PCI-e
XFX 6600GT PCI-e

Now...as long as the clock speeds are the same...I will and should have no problems running SLi with the mixed/matched brands.

My question is this....

Will I be getting a decent setup with the twin 6600's....os should I just save my money, and pick up an 8800GT ?

performance wise, a 8800 series card would destory those in SLI.

Look here, it'll give you an idea of how good certain GPUs do. As a reference, 8800 series beats everything in that list. In most games even a 7900GT will beat the 6600GT is SLI, with almost double the FPS. I mean 6600Gt your looking at about 90$ a card from Newegg, so say 185$ with shipping compared to 217$ for a 7900gt

Compare the specs, there not even close. Per card your getting 3 Times the pixels per clock, 2x the memory interface, more than double the memory bandwidth, almost three times the file rate, more than double the vertices per second, and not to mention the 7900gt is made for PCI-E, unlike the 6600gt which was made for AGP and uses a chip that makes it compatible for PCI-E.

7900gt
* PCIe native
* 450MHz core frequency
* 256-bit memory interface
* 40GB/sec. memory bandwidth
* 11B pixels/sec. fill rate
* ~900M vertices/sec.
* 24 pixels per cycle
* Built in dual-link DVI support for 2560x1600 resolution

6600gt

PCI Express
Memory Interface 128-bit
Memory Bandwidth 16.0 GB/sec.
Fill Rate (texels/sec.) 4.0 billion
Vertices per Second 375 million
Pixels per Clock (peak) 8
RAMDACs 400 MHz

To me this is a no brainer, a 7900gt/7950gt or a 8800series. The 8800 series even beats the 7950GTX2, the top graphics card before the 8800 series.

You dont have to go all out though, something like a 7900GS is still a capable card and is only $199.

no worries.....

I dumped the 6600gt's on a friend of mine. He;s making a socket 754 SLi machine to sell to someone.

I ordered an EVGA 7900 GS KO 256mb card....and will have a second one coming in a month. :)

So I'll run SLi anyways.... just delayed
