Overclocking AMD motherboards With 690G Integrated Graphics

LR has found that it is possible to further improve the gaming performance on AMD 690G motherboards by overclocking the integrated graphics! By adjusting the clock speed of the ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics engine for better 3D performance we were able to get a nice boost in frame rates. If you are looking into getting one of the many 690G based motherboards this is a must read!

Image
After clicking 'Find Max Core' the system shot from 400MHz well over 500MHz and I was greeted with a nice blue screen of death. After I rebooted and started ATITool, I was amazed that the AMD 690G chipset was able to reach 563.25MHz before the system crashed. I manually set the core clock frequency to 525MHz as anything over 550MHz would cause artifacts and that's not good...

Very cleaver your segway into over-clocking it :) Too bad you had that accident..which you showed in the last photo of the mobo. But I want to know how the air conditioning unit fell on your mobo? and did it hurt it :P I have to say it's hugely ugly :)

The Zalman CNPS9700 NT cooler is massive, but I think it looks really big since it's on a micro-ATX board! The other night it had my 5200+ at 19C according to the BIOS when I was checking the system health, so no complaints on the cooling abilities :)

I figured someone would give me crap on the NVIDIA logo on it and not the unit itself! :)

I love these articles, informative, interesting, and to the point.

I'm pretty amazed at how how high it went and the performance increases. Who knew you could OC an IGP?

I am wondering, however, how does the CPU overclock on these boards? Can we expect something like the ABIT NF-M2 nView? That little thing can hit 300+, a feat some full-size boards can't do.

Thanks for the feedback... I like trying new things... ;) I'll look into CPU overclocking at a later time...

Sure!

Thanks for looking into it.

If you think that integrated graphics could do more, Legit Reviews overclocked 690G graphics to see what results can be achieved. Default clock of 690 IGP is set at 400 MHz, but you can go higher than that. Legit managed all the way to the 523 MHz, when results turned even more interesting.
You should be so proud nate you made the inquirer

Push it to the limits!

Fun article - helping out the guys n' gals on a budget!
While overclocking the core is beneficial, it would have been nice if the memory clock frequency could also be adjusted.
Your graphics RAM speed = the speed of your system RAM - from your previous article that's PC2-6400 400Mhz 4-6-4-12. If there's any way to overclock the speed/quality of the system RAM, you would get the double benefit of improving your CPU and GPU performance. :finga:

Also, do you have a larger/copper/active heatsink you could bolt on to the northbridge as that little aluminum heatsink is surely holding back your GPU overclock?

/edit
More thoughts: Can you pump up the voltage on the Northbridge? Same as voltmodding your graphics card.

Is there thermal paste in between the Northbridge cooler and heatsink?

I feel some untapped potential is awaiting you!!! :snakeman:

Due to the interest I'll be overclocking this board in the near future. The northbridge was actually very cool. I hit it with the temp gun and it under 40C under full load, so not sure it would be worth it.

Thanks for the feedback! Many of the things I write about come from what you guys want to see.

that'd be interesting to see especially if someone wants a fast computer with low end gfx for mild gaming of older types such as cs:s, and just basic tasks for the most part. way to make the INQ by the way.

btw would it work better to use ati tray tools to overclock it rather than ati tool? I've seen better numbers in all cases with tray tools.

How can you montior the temp for the graphics processer? Probe gives a MB and Core temp.

don't believe you can on the 690G unless there is a way to monitor the entire chipset.

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I'm having problems when trying to overclock. First of all, I have an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI but I can't find any IGP overclocking options in the bios. Is it possible they've removed them in newer versions of the bios?

And when I run ATI Tool and choose the correct device in the settings, there's some unusual readings. The memory reads 400.96, but the core reads 57.28.

I wonder what the problem could be?

If it's not there now it's likely they removed it then. It's also likely that ATI Tool isn't setup for your board/device, so it's not working correctly. :(

That's a pity, I was hoping to squeeze out a few more FPS. Thanks for the reply!

Hi there R@jesh. I eventually found the problem - you need to be using one of the newer beta versions of ATITool. You can download the latest here:

Did it work for you? I think the 690G is really decent for onboard graphics, it runs Source games well.
