To Vista or not to Vista, that is the question...

Post by DaddyRabbit »

"Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?"

Whether to embrace the vast chasm that is the "new" and bravely venture as an explorer of fortune onto the sea of uncertainty or to remain nestled in the calm breast of "things that just work" and WindowBlinds?

Tell me Horatio (and anybody else) what path would you take?

In short, I ran Beta 2 on my last rig (A64 3500+, 1 gig etc) and the only issue was my HP PSC 2175 All in One would'nt work and several programs were incompatible.

I don't NEED it but you know how that is for a geek....

When XP came out, one of the biggest driver problems I had doing tech support was for HP products.

DMB2000uk,

Said the same thing to myself a thousand times <gr> but I get that "early adopter" itch every once in a while.

I tried Beta 2 for a while and, for the most part, liked it. But I've since built a new PC...

Maybe I'll just dual boot awhile :)

I got a copy of vista home premium from newegg fro 120. I only went vista because i built a brand new system, and so far i like it. Only the video card driver is a problem when it comes to opengl games. Games that are direct3d work flawlessly.

Vista

Post by Darkstar »

I did preliminary beta testing on it (RC2) and had all kinds of problems, many of them mentioned here. I liked it and thought alot of the improvements ( and eye candy) were nice. BUT......like most people are saying, wait for SP 1 before using it, there are too many problems with it right now.

If you do MP gaming ...wait...if you just do MS Office go for it. DX10 is the anti-OpenGL so you would expect them is not care about it at first. If enough of us wait for them to get it all right...it should be a good up-grade in 2008.

Well, like a dummy (I've done this before  ) I decided to go for it and got the Ultimate Upgrade (plus the Office 2007 Home/Student edition). Tried to upgrade my existing install but no go, I got a "this product cannot be installed on this computer" type of error. Did a clean install and a clean "custom" re-install to bypass the old version checking and now, so far, it's working well. My Steam backup won't restore however so I am re-downloading the works... :axe: , had to re-install Guildwars, haven't launched Office 2007 yet to deal with the infamous "Ribbon" but it's coming.

Next, how do I import my old Outlook PST file into Windows Mail (at least my old email messages) since "Transfer Files and Settings" didn't "Transfer Files and Settings" but really took a long time to NOT do anything...

Thanks for the input all, I might be sorry I didn't heed it... That's what they make Acronis for (I'm not totally stupid  )

You might need Vista when DirectX 10 games are released, since there will be no DX10 for XP (I think). If you want to play DX10 games, of course...

I went to Vista Ultimate 64-bit and so far the only problem I have is with HP printer support. Neither of my HP printers have compatible drivers for Vista...

Hopefully they will get that sorted out soon.

I have the same issues with my HP PSC2175 "all in one". It has limited functionality and isn't very stable. HP gives me a list of recommended new printers to buy however... :axe:

I think I will partially take their advice and buy a new printer. Samsung make the CLP-300 which is a nice little color laser HP won't be getting any more of my business...

I am also having the occasional stability issue with my Nvidia 8800GTS using the 100.25 driver I think it is but Nvidia is working fast and furious to get the issues with Vista fixed.

The lack of DirectSound (and 3d audio in a LOT of the games I play) is probably my biggest peeve at the moment. I may just yank the X-Fi and go with the onboard Sigmatel for now as I don't see Creative making much movement in the driver area.

All in all I'm liking it so far, wish I could say the same for Office 2007

I have no issue with Office 2007, use it daily for school tasks. Vista Business runs well on my laptop (see sig). Furthermore, I don't game on my laptop, and don't plan on putting Vista on my game rig till this nasty cloud of suckiness subsides a bit (i.e. sometime around SP1)

My main issue with Office 2007 is the DIFFERENCE. But I'm starting to see hoe I can customize the UI to my needs, it's just very different...
