Asus Motherboard problem? Or AMD?

My computer is custom built, but I built it over the summer and don't remember the exact specs, but I know I have an ASUS motherboard, and an AMD Athlon 3700+. It ran fine up until Christmas time and ever since that every time I close a game, or an internet browser, and some programs, the computer "locks" for a few seconds, and if my music is on, it repeats the same slice of a second until the computer "unlocks". The main reason I'm posting is that when I boot the computer, it takes about 8-10 minutes to get through the ASUS bootup screen, at which time I can't hit DELETE to enter setup, but once it gets through it, the bootup goes incredibly fast, and I'm logging into Windows within 15 seconds. Anyone have any ideas?

have you checked the memory?
WIth memtest+
