Should I or should I not...

Post by Sovereign »

I know what you're thinking. Another stupid should I install Vista thread. Yes, but take the "stupid" part out. I know that Vista poses some problems, such as incomplete SLI support. Further, Creative Lab's drivers (not the best to begin with) are in beta phase for X-Fi audio processors. However, I am aware of the caveats. I am also aware that dual booting is possible, but I don't believe all my games would fit installed twice, as I am not a fan of rebooting unless ABSOLUTELY necessary (i.e. no rebooting just to game) and I don't think I can just launch games that were installed under XP in Vista and vice-versa.

What other issues (besides drivers) should I watch out for if I were to install Vista? I do NOT use my computer for HD content, so the whole DRM thing, while draconian, does not apply to me.

go for it. I would download VMWare Server 6 Beta (its free) try it out there. Google all your parts see if anyone has issues with your parts. Google all your games and programs. Dual boot first, try it for a week. If it works reinstall as single boot

I am running Vista and it works fine for me.

I would not install the 64-biut version though, since that one caused me PLENTY of problems. 32-bit all the way for now :)

I installed 64-bit and have no problems. All 32-bit apps are working fine.

My main problem is driver support for my two HP printers for Vista 32 or 64.
I have a Photosmart 1215 that shows no signs of driver support at all for Vista... and Photosmart 2610 all-in-one network printer that just has workaround instructions to directly connect the printer to your computer until vista drivers are available.... no ETA.

Otherwise, all is good. Installed CS:S the other day but have yet to try it out.

I would go for vmware too. In fact i have dual boot here and i actually hardly reboot to change from one to another. But then you will have to run your games in vista, since vmware only has partial and experimental support to DirectX and opengl (except if this changed in version 6).
If you go the other way and host Vista from within Xp then i dont know if aero will work :(.

Anyway, i guess i'm lucky, i didnt have any driver problems. It just downloaded itself the ones needed and worked.
