E6400 EVGA 680i overclocking help

Post by ygmt13 »

Hi, I'm new to the forums as well as the world of OC'ing, but i am computer savvy and a very quick learner.

I just built my First Computer, an EVGA 680i w/ a C2Duo E6400 and 2 Gigs of DDR2 800 Ram; Arctic cooler Freezer 7 Pro

I am desperate however, to find out how to overclock, since all the guides i've found have been for asus motherboards...

Can anyone walk me through this process so i can learn how to OC on the Evga Mobo?

--Thanks, AJ

First off have you updated your BIOS to P26 that came out on 3-14-2007?? If not this is one of the first things you should do as it fills overclocking holes found in previous versions... Make sure you use the floppy disc method.

If I were you I'd leave all the voltages alone and increase the FSB from 1066Mhz up to 1333MHz and see if the board can run with stability at that setting. So basically change just a single setting... the memory should be left at 800MHz Linked or Unlinked and just the FSB is bumped up... Keep going up till you can't and then increase the voltage a couple notches up each time till you get the overclock you want... on my E6300 I can reach 1960MHz, which is a huge improvement from 1066MHz.

680i overclocking

Post by smokin_mitch »

I have a BFG 680i board pretty much the same as yours though with an E6700 (bigtyp 120vx cooler) and 2gb corsair dominator ram (8500c5d). This was my first time at overclocking and i also found online guides and even the nvidia overclocking guide didnt help me. I found the key thing to overclocking with these boards is the ram you use! My ram (corsair 8500c5d) is sli ram

all i had to do to overclock my pc was to disable CPU thermal control, C1E enhanced Halt state, and intel speed step in bios, save and reboot

also disable spread spectrum then reboot

go to bios memory settings enable sli memory (well worth the purchase) select expert then start increasing your cpu fsb. with sli memory u dont have to adjust your memory at all it does it for u as u increase the cpu fsb.

i started increasing my fsb in 100mhz increments untill it wouldnt boot into windows anymore then scaled back until it became stable

with my e6700 and vx120 cooler it is now completely stable at 3.49ghz  with a fsb of 1400mhz or 350x4 (compared to 266x4 over standard) with my corsair pc8500c5d @ 1050 mhz

all voltages on auto

Mind u though this was my first attempt at overclocking and 3.5ghz was my 4th try (1st booted at 3ghz, 2nd booted at 3.2ghz, 3rd 3.4ghz) tested each time with a couple of hours of gaming. Ihavent tried to overclock any higher yet because im happy with results

hope that helps

if u dont have sli memory id highly suggest u get some makes it easier for us noobs @ overclocking

3.5Ghz on air cooling

Post by smokin_mitch »

I would try to get close to or past 4Ghz if i could trust the ntune temp reading but i dont!? bios monitor 10-12 degrees cooler than ntune???

Any other good programs to monitor temps under vista 64?

core temp doesnt work

speedfan i tried got virus had to format and reinstall (not happy  )

Also i think i might save for Liquid cooling before i overclock any more?
