socket 939 heatsink clip broke
socket 939 heatsink clip broke
OK talk about some strange stuff! Wifes Uncle was having computer problems, it would restart, lock up, etc, so I checked it out ran the spyware crap etc, and nothign helped. I decided to check the temps, because of what i learned from overclocking the C2D from you nice people ;), and foudn out he was runing around 111C - yes 111! I freaked..lol. I took the computer apart and found out that the one side of that big black square hold down thingy for the heatsink/fan, broke ( what the hell is the proper name for this anyway? ). Now taht isnt so wierd, the wierd part is the piece that broke off somehow got UNDER the heatsink so it was stuck between the hetsink and the cpu!!! now of course the thermal grease did not fair well under these conditions, and I cant really test it out fully until I get another one of those damn things I dont know the name of.
I am guessing it is shot or so close to being shot taht he should replace the stuff.
This was by far the oddest computer problem I have come across! I think it even beats the bug nest inside a coiputer I found before, since this seems to have grown arms, raised the heatsink, and wiggled itself underneath..lol
Mike
Ok so what is the proper term for the hold down piece for the heatsink, can i buy one somewhere? It is a gigabyte board, so I might try and talk to them about it to see about getting that piece.

I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them to make sure I am asking about the right thing, but it seems to be the part that is on the motherboard - the hsf has the old style metal bar through it and then the plastic lever on the one side to hold it down.
I will take pics tomorrow ;)
Thanx for the QUICK responses!

I would appreciate one of those clips from someone as long as they are universal - seems like some of them come with new pieces for in the heatsink also to make the bracket work. I have a push down lever on this heatsink.
I can paypal some money to you, or send a money order, or whatever.
I hate to see you spend out of pocket for something for me!
Thank you all!!
I will PM my address to both of you, as I could always use a spare it seems..lol
Mike
Thanx again a TON!

B-H,
I'm glad that the favors network of someone helping you rubs off to help someone else too. Way to go!
So, how are those pumps working these days?
Anyways, if anyone else was looking for the AMD K8 brackets here in the states, just jump over to http://www.frozencpu.com . They have the OEM and the Scythe universal kits.
The Scythe universal kits are packed with more than just the OEM hardware. They include the "what-if" parts for semi-proprietary hold-down hardware too.
It's always nice to have a few great gaming and PC hardware places to get the out of the ordinary parts. I know that my local Radio Shack and Office Max are light years behind supplying something like this.
Peace!
Stev

Re: socket 939 heatsink clip broke
Hi Guys
I also need a AMD 754/939 heatsink retention bracket.
Does anyone on here still have one?
I’ve searched high and low on the internet can’t find anything.
Many thanks.
