Using a PC monitor as a TV

Post by BiGg RiE »

I have a 22" Westinghouse Monitor that has dvi-d and vga 9pin inputs and I want to use it as a tv for my cable box.

I have a dvi - hdmi cable, when I connect the wire the picture shows for about 10 seconds then I get a message along the lines of:

"Your High definition connection has been compromized. Please connect component cables."

A. What does that mean?

B. Can I use a pc monitor as a TV using this method?

C. If I use a component to dvi or vga adapter will it work? or DVI - Component wire like these:

Its possible that that message means something along the lines of your LCD doesn't support HDCP.

Do you know if it does? Or if your tellybox is trying to use HDCP?

Yes it does support it. This is the monitor:

I'm not sure about the box if it's trying to use it. But my 37 inch 1080p lcd I have connected to it can use hdmi and hdcp.

How can I check the box?

Try turning both off, turn on your cable box, then after that is back on turn on your TV/Monitor. It sounds like its not HDCP authenticating properly, turning them on in that order should help them authenticate.

Try googling your box to find out if it is HDCP. I've looked on the website for your monitor and I can't see anything about it being HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) complient. Are you sure that it is?

If it isn't, and your cable box is HDCP (which it sounds like) then you might have to try find a converter (not sure if the straight adaptors would work).

In reference to the cable box being hdcp complient I don't think it is. When I connect my big screen to it I can set my TV to either hdmi or hdcp and they both work. When set to hdcp I loose sound through hdmi.

But I will try the power on order solution. That sounds like it might work considering I get a picture for about 10 to 15 seconds when I turn on the monitor after unplugging it from my big screen 1080p tv.

I'll post results later.

Thanx for the input.
