Why I hate space heaters in an office

Post by bubba »

Well in my new position here at work I have been asked to survey the building and evaluate the current condition of the PC's and such.

Well I started in the lobby at the front desk and found this.

Image

The lady a the front desk told me that it got to close to the space heater under her desk, then pointed out the trash can had been melted as well. She also told me that since the PC and the other stuff she had plugged in was still working she didn't think it was bad.

I took this to the plant manager and showed it to him and told him "See this is why OSHA rules ban these things." He told me he would put a memo out to folks to take their heaters home.

Most companies just blow off OSHA, at least until they come around for a inspection (my former job before moving here to MO). I used to love going into large plants and finding these things, the large fines just start going up and up...........

One to cook herself with by the looks of it.

When I read the topic title I thought it was going to be a dig at P4's or something ^_^

Its a rather large space old heater, sets right in front of her under the desk and she still complains that is cold at her desk in the winter.

I'm thinking of taking the power strip apart to see what the wires inside look like.

as for the heater, I'll snap a pic of it when I get back in the office.

Why didn't she use a safe space heater. My neighbor has one for winter and that thing heats a room like no one's business, and yet is 100% cool to the touch.

It is more power efficient.

They draw a fair amount of power too The one I have (A Oil Filled Radiator) Draws 12 AMPS on High one to many, or just one for that matter (On a 15 AMP or 20 AMP Circuit) and off goes the power. And Lost work and a melted power strip. I also don't know why the heater manufacturers only put 16 Gauge wire on a heater have you ever felt the wire after the heater has been on a while in gets really hot they should atleast put 14 gauge wire
Computers are a lot like air conditioners - they both work great until you open up windows.

Seeing this thread again made me realize I never got the image of the heater...

Notice the nice safe storage of cleaners... I moved them after I took the pic.

How long will it take for the phone wire above the heater to melt and cross wires?

They sent a memo around telling folks to take them home, she said that its not hers so she left it. I told the GM about it and he said he would have the maintenance guy take it out.

As for the wire melting, its a good 3 foot from the heater so it should be ok, its taped to the bottom of the desk now.
