Just remember, as time sets in which grout will look better...

Lighter grout will get darker and it'll be easier to spot the nastyness of dirt and cleaning them isn't exactly fine.

even if it's sealed?

I thought grout, concrete and mortar all got lighter over time not darker...

I have Tile in several rooms(including a laundry room) and if you use a Quality sealer on the Grout it stays clean. I think i Used Tile Labs, and did about 4 separate applications. Test it by dropping some water on the grout, if it beads on top, you're good!

KnightRid wrote:Well we bought new kitchen cabinets ( SOLID wood cabinets from a local comapny taht they used for shows and for magazine pictures for $1500 - for the WHOLE thing! no counter tops, but at least 15 cabinets! ) and the wife though about doing tile for the floor. EVERYONE we talked to said dont :( Once you lay tile, you have a hell of a time with the grout staying clean, if you drop something on the tile taht is heavy, they break.

I like them laying normal, and since you are already doing it that way, good job :)

Mike

We are actually thinking of linoleum again for the kitchen *sigh* - Cheaper and easier to do, but tile woudl look so damn good.
You sure they were SOLID wood cabinets? If I were to sell you 15 "SOLID" wood cabinets, the box consisting of plywood, not solid wood as that would be extremely expensive, it would run you between $6,000 - $10,000 depending on door style and features of the cabinets. My bet is you have manufactured panels in the doors (read: not solid) and "furniture board" ends. If they are indeed solid/plywood cabinets, props to finding a hell of a deal! I'm serious on the price that I gave you for a solid construction cabinet! :P

Regarding flooring in a kitchen, stick to vinyl products or if you really want, hardwood. Ceramic is best in bathrooms, sun rooms, etc. You hit it on the head, if you drop something on it, it WILL crack and won't be fun to replace.

Nate, looks sharp! Get that baseboard back on there and it'll look even nicer! :)

Watch out for those in-stock cabinets at Home Depot. I believe they stock the same stuff my place of employment does, and they're not really all that great. Find something that is ready to assemble (European style cabinet) and those will be your best bet. They're finished inside and out and are actually pretty strong built cabinets.

The grout it self doesn't stain, it's the layer of gunk that builds up on them on top after you mop, etc...

It's like taking a fly swatter, and swatting a bowl of pudding, it'll get in between the grid and even though the surface is clean

It is worth between 12,000 and 15,000 on the market :)

Thanks man... First time doing it, so I'm happy! My girlfriend picked out Kiwi paint for the room, which should make it a bit more appealing... White walls with white appliances was boring...

I went to Home Depot and looked at Wall-To-Wall cabinets and for a 54" long by 30" tall set of cabinets with no finish was $150 and a 30" long by 30" cabinet was $60... So wall-to-wall cabinets would be just over $200 plus the stain if I wanted to do it myself... Not sure if it would add any appeal or value to the home over the white wire shelf/hanger that came with the home.

Looks sharp! Are you going to do anything with the transition between the floorings?

yup... my buddy is coming over and putting tack strip down and is going to pull it and cut it. He's a union floor layer for 15+ years, so I'm going to let him to that ;0

Yes, built ins/cabinets add value and appeal, but depnding on how long you are staying in the house, I'd go with what works best for YOU.
cabinets are easy to hang later if you decide the wire rack doesn't cut it.
