Black Steel case with wood side panels

Post by dgood »

So I started this project yesterday and got it most of the way done as it was a short project.
I found a dirty black atx case by a dumpster and a monitor, picked them us as they were exactly what I needed. The case was missing both side panels though which I didn't like. So I took some thin oak, less than a 1/4 inch, probably an 8th and cut it to fit. then my friend and I drilled some holes on the back side for four screws. and on the front we drilled holes to mount small hinges to open toward the back side, and one screw hold to put a thumb screw in to hold the door closed. I'll post up some pictures when I'm done staining it. It's nothing that exciting but we had this wood lying around and I wanted sides on this case. the case will probably have "the woody" spray painted onto the top of the black case also, if I can make a cool enough stencil.

This is what the case looked like originally,

except that Grey swoosh at the bottom is black also on this case. Also it is missing those sides.

I did the exact same thing with a bin find, except I used some really thin smoked plexi I had laying around. Waiting for pictures! Good luck with the project.

well I got it all back on the case, but can't find the camera or the cord to plug it in so i'll have to wait to post up pictures, then I'll also take pics when I get the computer put together.

Ok, so I forgot all about posting pictures about this case as my friend borrowed the computer to use it as a linux box. however I got it back this weekend to lan with it and let another friend use it. So the Woody is up and running. 2.4ghz amd 64 3400+ 1gb ddr 400, and bfg 7600gs. Makes for a decent extra computer to have sitting around. When I get home today i'm taking pictures of it and posting them up.

As you can see from the pictures it took a couple little hinges, some nuts, bolts, a drill, and a dremel to make it work, but now on one side I have a free swinging door with a one screw close on it. on the other side the wood is held on with just four screws into the metal, no hinge.

excellent way to use stuff laying around to make a cool mod. It proves you dont have to be rich to mod.

Get some moulding and a window in that and pinstripe that thing.

Pretty good base for a good mod. =D>
