Which Would be better?

Post by dgood »

I would like to know which one really is better. As gpu folding is enabled for x1600 and x1800 series thought eh x1900 is supposed to be a lot better. This is no intel core 2 duo just an amd 64 dual core. I am running smp already but am curious which would be better. Once we get central air here I will have a cool enough house to keep my gpu up as it will be like 67 in the house instead of 80 as it is now. Meaning my graphics card wont' overheat or get too hot while folding once that is the case. It never overheated but I did reach upper 70's C for full load in this weather.

Notes for running

1. The GPU GUI client will slow down the scientific core (since both use the GPU heavily). We do not recommend the GUI client for long term use, unless you have two graphics cards.

what does that mean? does that mean if I run this a lot it will hurt my graphics card's performance in gaming?

I noticed I voted for the GPU, when I should have voted for the CPU

I've ran the GPU client on an overclocked X1900XTX for a while and the best it could do was ~330pts every 9.5hrs
This was with an X2 3800+ @ 2.6GHz and a second CPU client running as a service. That CPU client didn't add alot to my PPD.
I'd say my total PPD with that setup was about ~900pts, but it used way too much power to run.

Got with a SMP setup, native linux install if you can, Vmware if you can't. You will return a completed WU every ~36hrs, which would mean a PPD of ~1000 or so and it's also more stable and economic!

well I ran the gpu client at night tonight to just finish a wu but it was getting too hot as my house heated up this morning again so I switched back I'll just run it at night and see it for a sec so I can finish one wu. smp seems more reliable for sure, but right now I have this large wu that is going to take close to a week to do where the last ones were like 24 hrs exactly. something gives me the feeling i'll not finish it in time. *edit* on this poll you can change your vote
