2x Dual Core 2.6 Machines Running SMP

Post by dgood »

Ok, so I think my second dual core machine in my basement is now stable enough to run folding at home. I have my toledo 3800 x2 at 2.6ghz. I think the thing causing instability in anything is the harddrive but I got smp up and running after I had orthos run on both blend and small tff's for 24 hours a piece. I took the wireless out of my athlon xp and put it in the dual core. so now I have two computers with smp folding. However it does take my athlon xp out of commision folding. But hey it is still an increase of 600 ppd at least. Hopefully it stays stable. i'll check in the morning. This is my feeble attempt to hold off illuminati's v8 for another day. ( I had to take the wireless card out of the xp cuz the mouse isn't working right on it because of dead ps2 and usb ports ](*,) )

It appears the computer is off. :( I think my parents turned it off this morning they don't like me having any extra computers running 24/7. They turn off the other ones a lot too. Guess I have to bring it inside if I want to have it do that for a while.

My house is a split level house with an upstairs a middle floor and a downstairs, then we have a crawlspace but it is almost a full basement with 7ft ceilings and cement floors. I put all my extra computers down there. It is where we lan. However she checks for running computers down there when I have people over to play games via lan as I did yesterday.

Arg! Having problems with my main machine the fx-60. After my computer bluescreened due to a wonderful windows stop error, get them maybe once every 3 months. I think due to lan drivers. I can't get smp to go like it was. It said loading checkpoint and is at 0 percent because this happened luckily right after my last wu went in. but it's not getting any progress. my 3800x2 has made 4 percent since I left this here like that.

man I didn't meet the deadline for one wu but it was a really large one so I disabled the larger than 5mb limit so I won't have that problem again plus it took 3 days to get to 24%.

sounds like the forcearm is not on. That would cause the client to run really slow. Create an fah.exe shortcut somewhere. In the target line at -forceasm after the quotes. It should look like this

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01\fah.exe" -forceasm

Most likely optimizations are off due to a bad shutdown. You put that in, no matter how the client ends it won't cause the SSE boost to not be one. Its not on at this point, hence the slow speeds

Is there a way to "properly" shutdown WinSMP?

At startup (of the SMP) it always says "Examination of work files indicates 8 consecutive improper terminations of core".

I have been running with -forceasm on and it wasn't the problem anyway, it was just a really insanely slow wu. now I can't seem to get it to skip it, just keeps saying it is stopping and doing a new one but never loads the new one.
-delete 7 seemed to do the job.
it is odd though that it won't automatically skip to the new one when it tells you that you have gone over the deadline.

Mine would take a while, but it would finally get the next work unit after telling me I had passed the deadline... I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 minutes of just sitting there before it would grab the next.
