new comp problems, please help!!!

Post by stinsonk »

A friend of mine just recently purchased a new system from ncix.com on the PC Builder and has come across a problem. When he received it, the computer's internet was only working at half the speed it did on his old system. Now, it refuses to give him a stable connection and the icon on the task bar flashes between connection and no connection. He has an old D-Link router on Bell Sympatico high speed DSL and is runing on the P5N-E motherboard as a lan card. Does anybody have any idea what can be attributed to this problem? I can get his full specs if need be.

Thanks from me and my friend,
Kevin

well...without the specs...Id say it could be the router..depending on what ya meant by its an "old D-Link router"....I mean..if everything is brand new, then I would suggest the router...but in reality it could be anything...could you post specs? just for giggles?

The easiest thing to try first is look for an updated NIC driver. If the board has 2 NICs then try the other one. Eliminate that the motherboard may have some bad components.

Next time I talk to him I'm gonna try to pull the router and go direct from the DSL hub on my cables because I know they work. I'm also gonna give updating all drivers for the MOBO a shot. Anyway, these are the full specs:

-E6400 Stock
-Asus P5N-5 motherboard
-Buffalo D2U667C-1G/BR 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 CL5
-EVGA 8800GTS
-Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620W ATX Triple 12V 50A 24PIN ATX Modular Power Supply

Hope this helps.

Like Major_A said, check for updated drivers. Might also be worth checking out device manager to see if there are any device conflicts of any kind (Start _> run -> type: devmgmt.msc ).

Plug the modem directly into the main computer bypassing all hubs, routers, and switches.

Then you can see if it is something with the router on not.

If that doesnt help, try a different NIC port.

If that doesnt help, buy a sledge hammer :p

Mike

If that doesnt help it might just be settings inside the computer. Try resetting all the network stuff (uninstall it and let windows find it again) and then try to add the modem.
Remember, I am opinionated and nothing I say or do reflects on anyone or anything else but me :finga:

Well, I swapped out all of his cables, hooked up a new router that I had kicking around and loaded all new drivers for his motherboard. One of the above seemed to have worked cause it's up and running now :) I fortunatly for him it wasnt a hardware issue (well, unless router was busted...)...and I didnt even need to waste money on a new sledgehammer!

Anyway, thank you from me and my friend guys,
Kevin
