Intel's Price Reduction on July 22

Having just bought a Q6600 recently, I was faced with the knowledge that this "price drop" was coming... So I'm waiting till after it hits to get my second one!

In the mean time, prices on DDR2 seem to be really LOW! So maybe now I should get some higher quality Mushkin RAM? Oh and a new 8800GTS... and a Asus Striker Extreme... and a new power supply (it never ends).

Core 2 Duo 6050 family which features 1333MHz FSB...

What chipset will the Core 2 with 1333Mhz FSB use? Will they still be using the 975X boards (which I think max out at 1066 FSB), or will there be a new board for 1333 FSB CPUs?

I'm not all that eager to jump to dual or quad core yet. My main hurdle is disk space for the computer right now.

BUT I'm sure happy that the prices are falling.

Any news about the other shoes dropping for the AMD camp?

Usually not. You would be surprised how close Newegg gets to or even below these prices.

Markups for memory, CPUs and hard disk drives are razor thin.

QFT......... , most US e-tailers come extremely close to the prices listed. It may take a week or so depending on the demand, but when everything is said and done, they'll be right on.

There is one in August but only for Celerons and one or two Xeon models, but that is the last one at least for the time being. I can't imagine Intel being able to afford to cut prices on Quads or their top frequency chips any further than $266 without eating the difference! Things might change with 45nm though, but that is still a ways off.

It'll most likely have a different number designation and it will not have the same price. new tech always cost more than current tech. Your gonna be looking at at least 400-500 for the first penryns

From what I've seen from some mother board certifications there are going to be some nice lower end Quads released early and hopefully for a good price............

I don't know why. If you check out spec.org benchmarks, the Opteron 2222 machines (3.0 GHZ) don't have a prayer at beating the 5160/X6800, in either FP or INT. Especially INT since almost everything you want to run fast is INT, the video cards do all the important vector and FP math.

I also only trust base measurements, because peaks are hacks at compiler options to make code a perfect instructions mix for the CPU arch, which almost never happens in real life.

I don't know why people suddenly think AMD is competitive, its not.

Its maximum wattage outputs are far higher, they cost more and have random sockets, now its 940-AM2 and F-1207, they have a huge family of sockets before now, which is stupid.

If you put together a gaming rig which you aren't overclocking this year and its not Intel - I feel bad for you. I have an X6800 and a 8800GTX, and I've had them for 6 months. Nothing AMD/ATI has done even registers on my radar as a remote threat. This will not change throughout this year.

AMD scales better due to integrated memory controller. This scales better when you put more than 2 sockets in a box. Who cares, no one games with 4 socket motherboards.

Intel had Netburst, which put AMD ahead - way ahead. Now Intel has Woodcrest/Conroe, which could potentially get AMD to quit making silicon if they cant catch up.

Conroe is potentially AMD-ending event. For myself, I have a host of Intel and AMD machines at home and at work, and I can say for 1-2 socket motherboards, AMD doesn't even exist anymore.

If price was the only incentive to wait I'd have pulled the trigger already on a shiney new Q6600! I have a theory that with the incredibly absurd demand for the new E6850 and Q6600 chips Intel may end up adding more higher bin grade chips into the Q6600 pile. And considering your new E6850 was boxed up on the assembly line about 10 days ago, I think there's a good chance some good grade Q6600s will be had in the next two weeks... 1.21vCore out of the box for the bottom bin Quad is just crazy.

I figured that one would cost more than the $266 Q6600, there simply isn't any room left to compress prices without EOLing some of them! Then again since these quads are still 1067FSB, it's possible they will be EOLed for the Yorkfields to take their places sooner rather than later and skip the price cuts to move them.

As a sidenote with all that extra cache sitting on-die I'm sure it's not going to help overclocking results, but maybe the new fab process will help matters enough to offset such issues. My E6300 shares that same 7x multiplier, and it took 542FSB to hit 3.8GHz with it. So to get absurdly higher 3.5Ghz+ overclocks one would need a 500FSB+ board... but I don't presently recall seeing any motherboards with watercooled quads that even reached 500FSB without some fancy sub-freezing cooling and high volts. The next higher bin 2.67Ghz Yorkfield with the 8x multi should be the better choice if they do indeed price them low enough...
