I am upgrading my system and am looking to upgrade..my old system had an Asus A8n 32 Sli Deluxe Mobo and an Athlon 64 4800+ chip now I want
Motherboard:Asus M2N32 SLI Deluxe Wi/Fi or premium
Processor:AMD Athlon 64X2 6000+ or the fx-62
Memory:4G Corsair XMS 1066
Hard Drive :2 dual stata striped raid
Graphics Card: 7900 GTX
PSU:700W
Monitor:Chimei 19"ws & Proview 12" WS
I am in a bit of a quandry as which wich direction to go. with the X2 6000 or the FX 62 which is actually faster for graphics
I do alot of Photoshop graphics and very little gaming (anymore) and am looking for a chip set that will help me processes photoshop rapidly.
Also am considering Asus L1n64 SLI WS dual socket and the FX-74 chips
uhm also considering an intel 2.66 Quad
I would like to stay with AMD and upgrade to the AMD quads when they come out, but I need speed now alos, alos am afraid that getting the dual socket MOBO will increase my processors to 8 and worried that my OS will operate it.. Will XP Pro 64 handle it or will I have to use buggy Vista Ultimate 64??
at this time I am operating XP pro but only 32 bits.
which set up will assist me in gettin gwhat I need or what are your suggestions??
Thanks Karl

*Good motherboard choice for AM2, pretty much the top end.
*Get the 6000+, the FX-62 is not any better and more expensive, it's just that the multiplier is unlocked, making overclocking somewhat easier.
*Good memory, but to run it at those speeds you will have to tweak your CPU multiplier and clock.
*7900GTX is most likely enough, unless you're running some insane resolution.
*PSU... it looks like you we're looking to save money on this. You don't only want to look at rated wattage, but the Amps available on the 12V rail. Corsair makes some very good PSU's.
The dual-socket platform price/performance ratio is pretty bad, Intel's quad cores consume less power and are faster. Currently, better performance comes from Intel, but this build leaves you room for upcoming quad-core from AMD.
So your choices are:
AMD build and upgrade later this year if the new CPUs are good otherwise switch back to Intel.
Intel build and get high performance right now, but may end up being not so high-end soon and switch back to AMD.
I guess that doesn't help much

Buy a $50 CPU cooler and overclock the CPU you have now. If you are lucky you might be able to hit 3.0Ghz and have saved yourself some money. Every review I've seen on the FX-62 the chip tops out in the 3.1-3.2Ghz range. The AMD silicon in their chips doen't go that far above 3.0Ghz all that often.
You need to get a 64-bit OS now, you aren't using 1GB of RAM in XP Pro 32-bit. XP Pro 32-bit can only use 3GB of RAM and I want to say that XP Pro x64/Vista x64 can use up to 64GB.
I don't know that there is a guarantee that the quadcore AMD CPUs will work on current AM2 boards. Aren't they calling the new CPUs socket AM2+?

Re: which chip set is better?? Trying to upgrade my PC HELP PLEA
The problem is that I don't have a processor at this time I had a meltdown on my power suppley..
my orignal board was the asus A8n SLi 32 Deluxe with an AMD 4800+ Processor...both fried, so now I am forced to update..
I think I am going to get th Asus L1n 64 SLI Dual Socket board and the 2 of the FX-74 (3.0) 1207 pin processors and make an updatable computer and then run dual quad core when AMD finally releases them.. word has it that they are not changing the pins on it and I will be able ot mount on this board (an Asus Tech told me this)
and while I am waiting for those I will up grade to XPPro 64 or Vista Ultimate 64 (only if they reales Sp1 by then).
And I am changing the ram to 2gig GeIL Esoteria Series Ram for a total of 4 gig, being that XP pro 32 can only read 3.2gigs of ram for a it I won't utilize it. BUT my ram whore photoshop might be able to.
What do you all think??

I still think that you will get a lot better performance from an Intel quad core rather than AMD's makeshift 4x4 platform.
See some comparison benchmarks here.
But if you want to stay brand loyal then i guess its the way you are going to have to go.

True and 4x4 platform uses ALOT of power, but if you're willing to spend the money to upgrade to Barcelona it might be a good choice.DMB2000uk wrote:I still think that you will get a lot better performance from an Intel quad core rather than AMD's makeshift 4x4 platform.
