Time for a new rig, comment this build!

Post by Zertz »

I found a buyer for my AMD rig so I'm planning to build a new system.

It will be based around this:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Mobo: ASUS P5K (Why does it have to be so ugly?) or the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
Video card: GEFORCE 8800GTS 320MB
PSU: Corsair 450VX
Memory: Some PC2-6400 2X1GB...

Looks good to me, but I'm not too sure what RAM to get, something that can clock high enough so it doen't limit the CPU. And which mobo too... hmm...

Nice rig!
I'd go with the P5K over the Gigabyte board....but I'm biased ;)
You'll need good ram to get the most from that CPU, as you'll be reaching ~1GHZ or more.

Depending on what OC you settle on and the amount of other peripherals you might be pushing the selected PSU to it's limits.

what are you thinking in terms of cooling?

Zalman 9700NT for now. Water eventually.

I might go for the 550W version of the same PSU, but I'm only running a single video card and I only have 1 DVD and HDD drive and a few fans. The 12V rail on the 450W is rated at 33A, while the 550W is 41A.

I don't really want to go ASUS, but if it's better... bleh.
And for the RAM, I probably won't go higher than 450 FSB because of cooling limitations so the RAM would have to be able to reach something like ~950Mhz to leave me some room. Does that make any sense?

Any recommandations for a good 2x1GB kit that will run those speeds? Has to be available in Canada. Those Crucial kits look good and they aren't too expensive (~150$):

520 would be alittle better, not by much, but if it was me I'd go with the 520W Corsair

Found a good deal at FutureShop, but like all the good deals you find there, the item is unavailable. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/prodde ... 630&catid=

After a quick Google search, here's some memory

Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit -- $155 CAD
OR
Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X2048-6400C4D 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Memory Kit -- $199 CAD

AFAIK both kits use Micron "D9" chips, so you should be good for ~1.1GHz or more & 1GHz with CAS 4 8)

Thanks :)

I'm assuming those use the same chips?

...lame, the guy told me he was sending me the money asap because he needed it quick, then he PMs me a few days later saying he changed his mind :|

So this new computer will have to wait a bit :(

I think what I'm gonna for now is order the video card. theres that 320MB GTS on sale at $279, but I spotted a 2900XT for 375 too... I'm wondering if it's worth it performance wise. Like, will it be $100 faster
