Internet Problem

Post by tekgek »

I have a wireless G router in my bedroom that has two computers liked to it. I use the wireless function to transfer file and share my printer with my laptop, which is usually hardwired (via ethernet) to the internet. This wireless router is not connected to the internet, but my laptop is. Is it possible, through my laptop, to use the wireless connection on my laptop to internet to my computers upstairs? If I worded that wrong, here is the basic question: Can I share my ethernet connection so that I can make my two computers upstairs connect?

I would say - If you use your router AS a router, then it would be no problem, but you seem to be using a wireless router as a hub for data transfer

Routers are simple, why people try to do crazy things is beyond me...

Internet -> Router -> other computers DONE

If your computers upstairs do not have a wireless connection, either run your interent upstairs to the router and branch off from there, or else buy some wireless usb adapters for them - they arent all that expensive, and then you could do what you want.

Mike

Someone else had a goofy router setup trying to run the internet through a computer throught the wireless router then to computers - WHY?

ok enough freaking out for me :) I would hook it up properly, then you will have no trouble.

I would of said the same thing, but then I thought to myself "Good question". Maybe he wants to have a wireless LAN rather than a wireless internet so his neighbors won't try to steal his bandwidth!

Then you just implement WEP, WPA, WPA2 or whatever your comfortable with. Hooking up the wireless to your DSL/Cable modem will not prevent you from having a wireless LAN. The wireless router will have settings for the LAN and WAN and are easily configured. Its also a lot more secure than having a laptop connected to the internet direct.
