Overclocking an AMD 6000+ CPU. Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Mobo

Hi Everyone.

I am new here and have never overclocked before. I have recently got a New PC with a 6000+ X2 CPU in a GA-M55SLI-S4 Gigabyte Mobo.
I would appreciate it if someone could explain overclocking to me and how it is done? Precautions?
I have a 520w Raidmax PSU in it and 2x 12cm Fans and 1x 9cm Fan. (This excludes mobo fans, graphics fans, CPU fans etc)
And just the standard heat sinks etc. I have a Thermaltake Soprano Case.

What speed is this CPU able to be overclocked to safely without the crashes etc?
Any experiences doing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 6000+ is usually capable of doing 3.1-3.3Ghz under air, it's already AMD's high end and their silicon doesn't clock much higher than that.

Theres many guides out there that will show you how to overclock.

Basics are increase the Reference Clock (often referred as FSB even though it's wrong), default on AMD processors is 200 Mhz, so just slowly increase it until you get a BSOD, then increase the Vcore and try increasing the FSB again. You'll quickly hit a wall with these processors, youll know you've reached the max when even if you feed it alot of Vcore it won't boot at that frequency. If you have decent RAM it should be able to take that little overclock.

There will always be some element of risk with overclocking, and as long as the 'user' is aware of the potential implications for damage then I don't see why they shouldn't. People have to start somewhere and overclocking can be very 'fun'.


In regards to what zertz said you probably would be best finding a good overclocking guide. I don't know specifics about AMD chips so can't say myself, but someone should add to zertzs basics with; a max Vcore you shouldnt go above, and a safe temperature you should stay under. Instead of running until you hit a BSOD you should try some quick stability checks like running super pi to 32million places. If it breaks you arent stable and need more vcore. When you think you have found the max stable, try running a longer stability test like ORTHOS for a lot longer (say 8 hours+) to make sure it really is stable.

I wouldn't go far over 1.5V and no more than 50C under full load.

And yeah, what i posted is really basic, there are some good overclocking guides out there, the more you read, the better.

I was referring to the BSOD you get when Windows is booting, but thanks, I completly forgot about stability testing

Blasphemy! I don't own a stock computer, well maybe my laptop, but every computer I have is overclocked. I have one out in my smoking section, aka my garage, that is overclocked in the Texas summer heat.

do not try to overclock your 6000+
it run at 3ghz , if you try to overclock , it 's a large risk to reach 3.1 or 3.2 maximum , in addition it will affect the cpu temperature
i have a 6000+ , not overclicked and one ocz cooler , the temperature is 35C best of the best

I got my 6000+ to 3,37 Ghz @ 1.4 V.

Not sure it's stable at that speed though.
Keep it under 3,3 and you should be safe.

That looks high for a water cooled CPU, how much voltage you need on that chip to get it to that speed? Also, what's your cooling setup?
